Ticket Booking System: Indian Railways is set to upgrade its 40-year-old ticket reservation system using AI technology, a move that will make ticket booking five times faster. Learn all about the new regulations here.

Railway's New Ticket Booking System: Millions of people travel by train every day. Many passengers book their tickets months in advance to ensure they secure a confirmed seat; however, it is frequently observed that travelers encounter various issues—such as slow server speeds or a lack of timely ticket confirmation updates—that prevent them from successfully obtaining a ticket. To resolve these issues, Indian Railways is now undertaking a complete overhaul of its 40-year-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS). This new system will be powered by AI technology, making the ticket booking process faster and more seamless than ever before.

Major Changes to the 40-Year-Old System

According to the Railways, the current reservation system was originally launched in 1986. Although minor modifications have been implemented periodically over the years, the system is now undergoing a comprehensive upgrade. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has issued directives to officials to transition trains to the new system starting in August.

Why Was a New System Necessary?

Since the inception of online ticket booking, the legacy system has faced immense pressure due to the exponential increase in usage.

Approximately 88 percent of all ticket bookings across the country are currently conducted online.
Consequently, the older system tends to slow down significantly when subjected to high traffic volumes.
Furthermore, passengers often face difficulties in receiving real-time updates regarding their bookings.

The Growing Popularity of the RailOne App

Indian Railways' 'RailOne' app is rapidly gaining popularity among the public.
The app was launched last July.
To date, it has garnered over 35 million (3.5 crore) downloads.
Moreover, the app offers a dual functionality, facilitating both ticket bookings and the resolution of passenger grievances.

Key Highlights of the New System

AI will now predict whether a ticket is likely to be confirmed or not.
This prediction mechanism will operate based on historical data analysis. AI to Predict Whether Tickets Will Be Confirmed

A new AI-based prediction feature has been added to the system. Based on historical booking data and trends, this feature will indicate the likelihood of a waitlisted ticket getting confirmed. According to the Railways, this prediction will be up to 94% accurate.

Bookings to Become 5 Times Faster

In terms of booking speed, the new system will be capable of processing tickets at a rate of 125,000 per minute. In contrast, the current system has a capacity of 25,000 tickets per minute. This upgrade will not only reduce server load but also help curb the activities of touts and the use of illegal booking software.

Change Travel Dates Without Cancellation Fees

Under the new system, passengers will now be able to modify their travel dates without having to cancel their confirmed tickets. Most notably, no cancellation fee will be charged for availing this facility.

Aadhaar Mandatory for Tatkal Tickets

To prevent irregularities in the booking process, the Railways has now made Aadhaar verification mandatory for online Tatkal ticket bookings.

What Are the Benefits for Passengers?

Faster ticket booking speeds.
Accurate information regarding waitlisted tickets.
Reduced server-related issues for passengers.
Access to a simpler and more reliable service.
