Vernon Kay and Tess Daly's shock split had actually been on the cards for months, friends of the pair told Express.co.uk. Those close to the BBC Radio 2 presenter, 52, have said Vernon's behaviour noticeably changed in the run-up to his split from Tess.
The couple confirmed they had separated in a statement shared on Instagram on Friday, May 8th: "After much consideration, and with a deep sense of care and respect for one another, we have made the decision to separate amicably. This has not been an easy choice, but it comes from a place of mutual understanding and a shared desire for what is best for both of us. We remain great friends and, most importantly, fully committed to our roles as loving and supportive parents, which will always be our priority.
"There are no other parties involved in this decision. We kindly ask for privacy during this time as we navigate this transition together. We will not be making any further public comments. Tess and Vernon."
A friend told Express.co.uk: "It was obvious that something wasn't right with Tess and Vernon for ages. Their announcement may have shocked the public, but it really was not much of a surprise in the industry.
"Vernon had stopped talking about his family on set and was clearly avoiding any questions about Tess. He also started whispers when he started taking more care with his appearance, leaving people wondering if something was going on at home.
"Everyone is very sad for them, but no one was shocked. The rumour mill had been running for ages and it seemed the writing was on the wall for a while."
Vernon addressed the split live on air on Monday, May 11th, as he thanked fans for their support during the difficult time.
He said: "I just want to say on behalf of me and Tess, thank you for your well wishes. It's been greatly appreciated," before quickly moving on to the rest of his three-hour show.
The pair first met in 2001 and tied the knot in September 2003. They share daughters Phoebe, 21, and Amber, 17, together.
