Meta AI Tool: Meta has taken a significant step to curb fake accounts created by underage children on its social media platforms. The company is now utilizing a new AI system to identify users who are creating accounts on Instagram and Facebook while concealing their true age. Specifically, this feature is designed to detect children under the age of 13 who have begun using the platforms by entering a false date of birth.

Scanning Not Just Birthdates, But Photos and Videos Too

Meta’s new system will not rely solely on the age listed in a user’s profile. The company’s AI will now also analyze users’ posts, bios, captions, and comments. If a post contains clues related to a birthday, school grade, or age, the system may flag that account for further investigation.

Furthermore, the AI will attempt to interpret visual cues visible in photos and videos. Based on body structure, height, and other general physical characteristics, it will estimate the age group to which the user likely belongs.

However, Meta has clarified that this does not constitute facial recognition technology. According to the company, the AI does not identify a specific individual but rather attempts to estimate a general age range.

Account to Be Suspended Immediately if Fake Age Is Detected

If the AI suspects that an account belongs to a child under the age of 13, Meta may suspend it immediately. Subsequently, the user will be required to submit documents—such as a government-issued ID—to verify their actual age. If the user fails to verify their age, the account may be permanently deleted. Conversely, users aged 13 to 17 who have falsely claimed to be adults will have their accounts switched to “Teen Account” mode.

Limited Features Available in Teen Account Mode

Various safety restrictions and limitations will be enforced within the Teen Account mode. Under this initiative, messages from strangers will be restricted, harmful comments will be hidden, and access to sensitive content will be curtailed. According to Meta, users under the age of 16 will be unable to alter these settings without parental permission.

Why, then, has Meta taken such a significant step now?

For some time now, Meta has been facing mounting pressure regarding the online safety of children. Numerous reports have revealed that a large number of children were easily accessing social media platforms by simply entering a false age. Furthermore, the company reportedly faces the threat of hefty fines in Europe and the US for violating regulations related to child safety. This is precisely why Meta has now begun rapidly implementing an AI-based age detection system.
