There is a temple of Maa Kamakhya in Guwahati, Assam, where devotees who come for darshan also come to this temple of Lord Shiva. According to religious belief, Lord Shiva had killed Kamadeva at this place. Now the question arises that what is the history of Umanand temple, also the question arises why it is called Bhasmachal?
According to religious stories, Umanand Island is a symbol of the love of Lord Shiva and Mother Sati. Mother Sati was the daughter of King Daksh, who did not like the relationship between Shiva and Sati. For this reason, Mother Sati broke all relations with King Daksh and came to live on Umanand Island. Sati ji and Lord Shiva had spent their lives at this place for many years. For this reason, after many years in 1694, a temple of Lord Shiva was built here.
According to mythology, once King Daksh had organized a puja ceremony, in which Mother Sati was also invited, whereas Lord Shiva was not invited. Due to which Sati ji became sad and expressed her wish to Shiv ji to go to the puja ceremony. Lord Shiva agreed to Sati. After which both of them reached Daksh’s house and King Daksh became furious after seeing Lord Shiva. During the entire ceremony he insulted Lord Shiva and Satiji. After which Sati ji could not bear the insult of Lord Shiva and committed suicide.
After separation from Sati ji, Lord Shiva started feeling very sad. Seeing this, Lord Vishnu sent Kamadeva to Umanand Island. Kamadeva came in joy and started dancing, so that Lord Shiva’s mind becomes calm. At that time Lord Shiva was very angry and he burnt Kamadeva to ashes. After which Kamadeva’s beautiful form was lost forever. For this reason this temple is known as Bhasmachal.
