According to the Hindu calendar, the extra month that occurs approximately every two and a half to three years is known as *Purushottam Maas*. Due to the occurrence of *Adhik Maas* (the intercalary month), this year will feature two months of *Jyeshtha*; consequently, this month will span approximately 60 days (from May 2 to June 29, 2026).
This period is considered highly auspicious and fruitful for the worship of Lord Vishnu, acts of charity, and religious rituals. However, do you know why the performance of auspicious ceremonies is restricted during *Adhik Maas*?
**Why Auspicious Ceremonies Are Restricted**
According to Chandresh Sharma, an astrologer at *Astropatri*, the performance of auspicious ceremonies is deemed prohibited during *Adhik Maas* (also known as *Malmaas*). In the year 2026, no *Sankranti* (solar ingress) falls within the duration of *Malmaas*. The absence of a *Sankranti* results in a deficiency of solar energy; for this very reason, auspicious or ceremonial events (*Mangalik Karya*) are not undertaken during this period. From a spiritual perspective, this entire month is dedicated exclusively to the remembrance and devotion of the Divine.
Although some people in today's materialistic age may not adhere to these rules, according to the scriptures, this practice is entirely logical and appropriate. During this period of diminished energy, engaging in the worship of God—rather than performing auspicious ceremonies—is considered to be the most beneficial path for one's well-being.
**Actions to Undertake to Earn the Grace of Lord Vishnu**
Acts of charity and virtuous deeds performed during *Malmaas* are believed to attract the special grace of Lord Vishnu upon the devotee, thereby ushering happiness and prosperity into their life. Furthermore, this period is also regarded as a time conducive to attaining *Moksha* (liberation).
To receive the blessings of Lord Vishnu during *Malmaas* (*Adhik Maas*), one should bathe daily during the *Brahma Muhurat* (the auspicious pre-dawn period) and recite the *Vishnu Sahasranama*. During the worship of Lord Vishnu, one should offer *Tulsi* (Holy Basil) leaves and chant the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya."
During this sacred month, it is highly recommended to listen to the recitation of the *Shrimad Bhagavat Katha*.
Chant the mantras "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" or "Om Narayanaya Namah."
Throughout *Adhik Maas*, light a *ghee* lamp (*diya*) in front of a *Tulsi* plant every morning and evening. During this holy month, you may donate food, clothing, or *Malpuas* served in a bronze vessel—according to your means and devotion—an act considered highly auspicious.
According to religious beliefs, undertaking a pilgrimage to the Braj region (Mathura, Vrindavan) during *Malmas* is also considered to be immensely meritorious.
