One of Netflix's unexpected successes is receiving a surprising continuation.
A '10/10' series that had viewers 'yelling at the TV' is set to receive a sequel, the streaming platform has announced.
Fresh information about the forthcoming title has emerged and aims to be just as addictive as the original.
La Palma first premiered in December 2024 and swiftly became amongst the most viewed programmes by subscribers.
It centred on a Norwegian family enjoying the Christmas period on the Canary Island of La Palma, who suddenly encounter catastrophe when a scientist uncovers evidence of an approaching volcanic eruption.
Meanwhile, Florida, according to Netflix will continue the narrative mere hours following the eruption on the island. Described as a standalone sequel, the storyline will centre on a Norwegian community in Florida (in the United States) who remain completely oblivious that a catastrophic tsunami triggered by the eruption is racing across the ocean towards them.
The original writer of La Palma Lars Gudmestad is back to craft the screenplay while Grey's Anatomy director Cecilie Mosli will oversee all four episodes. A confirmed release date has not yet been announced but it is anticipated to arrive sometime in 2027, reports the Mirror.
Gudmestad expressed his enthusiasm for the project. They said: "To be able to make Florida is a dream I have had for a long time, and I am very pleased that Netflix also believes in the project.
"Our ambition is to create a spectacular disaster series with characters audiences can recognize themselves in and truly care about, and that's why it's so reassuring to have such a talented and experienced director like Cecilie with us on this journey."
Director Ceceilie Mosli added: "People confronted with crises are the most fascinating starting point for drama. With La Palma, Lars Gudmestad, Fantefilm and Netflix demonstrated the power of combining large-scale disasters with intimate human stories, and I am very proud and happy to be part of the new project, Florida."
La Palma ranks as the 8th most-watched non-English television programme in Netflix's global history, while the four-part limited series amassed an extraordinary 70.3 million views in total. Despite garnering just six reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts an impressive 100% approval rating.
One critic declared: "La Palma is enjoyable and binge-watch-worthy, making us watch a terrifying reality in an engaging way." Meanwhile, numerous viewers were equally enthusiastic and shared their endorsements.
A fan posted: "I'm over here balling my eyes out and rose over here just a humming ..10/10." While another said: "La Palma delivers stunning visuals, compelling characters with each there own unique stories, and nonstop suspense throughout the series. It's an exciting, well-crafted mini-series that keeps you hooked from start to finish."
Another viewer remarked: "Lots of me yelling at TV - 'get out of there now, why doesn't that plane take off?, don't get off that plane.'"
La Palma is streaming on Netflix now. Florida is streaming on Netflix in 2027.
