In a major milestone for the Indian elevator components maker, Sharp Engineers, the company announced it has received the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certification for its SEG-X7 gearless traction machine series. According to a statement, the certification, granted under CSA B44.1/ASME A17.5 standards, marks the first time an Indian-manufactured gearless traction machine has secured this approval category for North American markets.

The certification enables architects, elevator consultants, and developers in the United States and Canada to specify the company's machines for commercial and residential high-rise projects. Industry experts note that regulatory compliance remains one of the biggest barriers for Indian engineering exports in advanced markets, making the certification a notable achievement for the sector.

Founded in 1994, the Ahmedabad-based company has evolved from a domestic elevator component manufacturer into an export-oriented engineering player catering to 25 countries, worldwide. The development reflects a broader trend in India's manufacturing ecosystem, where precision engineering firms are increasingly competing with established international suppliers in specialized industrial sectors.

The company says the SEG-X7 series has been designed for high-traffic elevator applications where operational efficiency, reduced vibration, and precise floor levelling are essential. The machines support load capacities of up to 4,500 lbs in 2:1 configurations and operating speeds reaching 500 feet per minute, making them suitable for commercial towers, residential skyscrapers, and freight movement systems.

"The CSA certification for our SEG-X7 series is a defining moment, not just for Sharp Engineers, but for Indian elevator manufacturing as a whole. It validates our belief that world-class engineering can come from India. Our expansion into North America is a long-term commitment, and we are determined to offer the global market a reliable, high-performance, and non-proprietary alternative-one that grows responsibly alongside the planet,” said Amit Patel, Technical Director, Sharp Engineers in a statement.

The company says the machines are equipped with Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) technology, which has become increasingly popular in modern elevator systems because of its lower power consumption and smoother ride quality compared to conventional geared systems. Industry analysts believe the global shift toward energy-efficient urban infrastructure is accelerating demand for such gearless elevator technologies.

Another factor contributing to market interest is the growing preference for Machine Room-Less (MRL) elevator systems. MRL configurations reduce the need for additional construction space, making them attractive for modern urban developments where space optimization has become critical.

Sharp Engineers currently operates from an 81,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in the Kathwada GIDC industrial area of Ahmedabad. According to company officials, the plant has an annual production capacity exceeding 42,000 units and incorporates automated winding systems and precision assembly lines aimed at ensuring consistent manufacturing quality.

Safety and testing protocols remain central to the sector as elevator systems increasingly serve dense urban environments. Every gearless traction machine produced by the company undergoes load-testing procedures before dispatch to validate torque stability, braking performance, and thermal endurance under heavy-duty operating conditions.

Sharp Engineers is positioning itself within the growing open-market segment by manufacturing traction systems compatible with independent maintenance ecosystems. This allows building operators to choose third-party certified contractors for servicing and repairs, potentially lowering maintenance costs and reducing operational downtime over the long term.

To strengthen its international presence, the company established Sharp Engineers LLC in 2025 as its North American subsidiary. Headquartered in Illinois with operations in New Jersey, the unit focuses on local distribution and technical support for CSA-certified elevator components across the region.

The expansion is strategically timed as India's engineering exports continue their strong upward trajectory. Engineering goods rank among the country's largest and most vital export categories, reflecting the growing global confidence in Indian manufacturing precision and quality. The United States has emerged as a particularly significant destination market for Indian industrial products, underscoring the deepening trade ties between the two nations and the increasing competitiveness of Indian engineering on the world stage.
