The 66th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 was played between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In this match played at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday (May 21), GT registered a resounding victory by 89 runs. When invited to bat first, GT had set a target of 230 runs for CSK, chasing which the team captained by Rituraj Gaikwad collapsed for 140 runs in 13.4 overs. After this defeat, CSK is out of the race for the playoffs.

CSK could not stand in front of GT

GT, who came to bat first after losing the toss, got a strong start from the opening pair of captain Shubhman Gill and Sai Sudarshan. Both made an opening partnership of 125 runs. Gill played an inning of 64 runs in 37 balls with the help of 7 fours and 4 sixes. His wicket was taken by Spencer Johnson. After Gill’s dismissal, there was a huge partnership of 82 runs in 36 balls between Sudarshan and Jos Buttler for the second wicket, due to which GT scored a huge score of 229 runs after losing 4 wickets. Sudarshan scored 84 runs in 53 balls, which included 7 fours and 4 sixes. Butler scored 57 runs in 27 balls. 5 fours and 4 sixes came from his bat.

After the amazing work of the batsmen, GT bowlers wreaked havoc and took 4 wickets of CSK in the power play itself. Mohammed Siraj took the wickets of Sanju Samson (0), Ruturaj (16) and Urvil Patel (0) while Kagiso Rabada dismissed Matthew Short (24). After the field opened, Karthik Sharma (19) was run out by Gill on a direct hit. CSK’s defeat was certain after losing 5 wickets for 63 runs. Shivam Dubey played an inning of 47 runs in 17 balls but he could only entertain the audience. CSK lost their last 4 wickets for just 4 runs and were shamefully eliminated from IPL 2026. Siraj, Rabada and Rashid Khan took 3-3 wickets for GT.

…So will GT finish in top-2?

With this win, GT has strengthened its position at second place in the points table. He has 18 points after 14 matches. Royal Challengers Bangalore is on top with 18 points. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has 16 points and is at third position. RCB and SRH are going to clash tomorrow (21st May). If SRH does not achieve a big win in this match, then GT will finish in the top-2, because its net run rate is much better than the team captained by Pat Cummins. Being in the top-2 will give GT two chances to play the finals.
