Manchester United have officially announced that Michael Carrick has signed a contract to become the club’s permanent head coach at Old Trafford, with the deal extending until the summer of 2028.
The Red Devils had dismissed Ruben Amorim in January and placed Carrick in charge as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
Although the club initiated a process to find a long-term replacement, Carrick’s impressive performance while leading the team convinced the management to appoint the former midfielder on a permanent basis.
Under Carrick’s leadership, Manchester United secured a third-place finish in the Premier League with one game still left to play, ensuring their return to the UEFA Champions League next season.
Announcing the appointment through an official statement, Manchester United said: “Manchester United is delighted to confirm that Michael Carrick will continue as head coach of the men’s first team, having signed a new contract running until 2028.
“Carrick rejoined the club as head coach in January and was named Premier League Manager of the Month after guiding United to victories over Manchester City and Arsenal in his first two matches. He has steered the team to qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League with 11 wins in 16 matches, achieving the highest points total in the league since his arrival.
“One of United’s most decorated and successful players, Carrick made 464 appearances for the club, winning five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League, the UEFA Europa League and the FIFA Club World Cup.”
Sharing his thoughts on the appointment, Carrick stated: “From the day I first arrived here 20 years ago, I’ve always felt the magic of Manchester United.
“To carry the responsibility of leading such a special football club fills me with immense pride.
“Over the past five months, this group of players have shown they can meet the levels of resilience, unity, and determination that are expected at this club.
“Now we move forward together, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be competing for the biggest honours once again.”
Director of Football Jason Wilcox also commented: “Michael has fully earned the right to continue leading our men’s team. During his time in charge, we’ve seen not only strong results on the pitch but also a leadership style that embodies the club’s core values, traditions, and history.
“His success in guiding the team back to the Champions League should not be underestimated. Michael has built a great rapport with the players and fostered a winning mentality both at Carrington and in the dressing room, something that we will continue to strengthen further.”
