Will Alisson Play This Weekend? Latest Update on Liverpool Goalkeeper’s Fitness Ahead of Brentford Clash

Liverpool have been without their first-choice goalkeeper, Alisson Becker, since the middle of March due to injury.

The Reds still have some work left this season to secure qualification for next year’s UEFA Champions League.

While Bournemouth are unlikely to overtake Liverpool given the Merseyside club’s superior goal difference, the margin is not so large that Andoni Iraola’s side couldn’t, in theory, surpass them.

Just one point at home against Brentford on Sunday afternoon would confirm Liverpool’s top-five finish. A victory could even see them finish fourth if Aston Villa lose away at Manchester City. The big question remains: who will be in goal for Liverpool against Brentford?

Alisson has not featured for Liverpool since their Champions League win over Galatasaray in mid-March after suffering a hamstring injury. In his absence, Giorgi Mamardashvili has taken up goalkeeping duties.

The Brazilian has been edging closer to a return in recent weeks. Manager Arne Slot mentioned several times in early May that Alisson was ‘very close’ to resuming full training.

Although those comments may have been slightly premature, the latest update from the Liverpool boss confirms that Alisson is now back training with the rest of the squad.

Speaking on Friday morning, Slot said, “Ali will train with us today, so that’s positive.”

Alexander Isak has also returned to training ahead of the final match of the season after missing last week’s 4-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

Both Alisson and Isak will need to carefully balance demonstrating their fitness and readiness ahead of this summer’s World Cup while avoiding any unnecessary injury risks.

Despite missing the last two months through injury, Alisson has been included in Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad and is expected to remain the first-choice goalkeeper.

Isak, meanwhile, has been named in Graham Potter’s Sweden squad alongside Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres.
