Knews Desk– Artificial Intelligence i.e. AI is no longer limited to the world of technology only, but its impact is clearly visible on media and journalism as well. Many big tech companies including Google are launching such AI search tools, which have started providing answers to questions and summaries of news directly to the users. Due to this, the need to click on news websites is decreasing, which has increased the concern of news publishers.

How is AI becoming a threat?

Experts say that AI based search features scan news articles, blogs and social media posts and prepare their summary in a few seconds. The user does not need to visit the website to read the complete news. This is the reason why the risk of decreasing traffic of news websites is increasing.

Tech lawyers and AI governance experts believe that AI is now moving beyond “content discovery” to “content replacement”. That means AI is not just helping in finding news, but is itself becoming an alternative to news. This can have a direct impact on the earnings and digital advertising of media companies.

What does the law say in India?

There is currently no clear law regarding AI and news content in India. Although the Copyright Act and the IT Act provide some degree of protection, the increasing use of generative AI has started a new legal debate. Experts say that if AI delivers key information of a report directly to the user, it can harm the economic value of the original content.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has also said that tech companies should do fair revenue sharing with content creators and publishers. At the same time, Narendra Modi has also emphasized the need for responsible AI governance in many international forums.

changing rules in the world

New rules are being made in many countries of the world regarding AI and copyright. Australia has implemented a payment model between tech companies and news publishers. China has made it mandatory to label content made from AI. Licensing rules have been implemented in Europe also regarding the use of news content.

Experts believe that if the readership of news websites continues to decline due to AI search tools, then independent journalism may face economic crisis in the future. In such a situation, creating a balance between AI and media is being considered the biggest challenge in the coming times.
