Alejandro Garnacho has officially made the switch from Manchester United to Chelsea in a transfer worth £40 million, marking a major move in the Premier League summer window.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Argentina international has put pen to paper on a seven-year contract with the Blues after the two clubs reached an agreement for a £40 million fee ($54m) along with a 10 per cent sell-on clause. At 21 years old, Garnacho becomes Chelsea’s latest addition to an already busy transfer period, joining after recent signings such as Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, and Jorrel Hato. The club has also completed prior deals for Estevao, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr, and Kendry Paez.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Garnacho had long been on Chelsea’s radar, especially after Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim made it clear that he, along with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia, would not be central to his plans for the 2025-26 season. This decision paved the way for a move that now sees the winger take on a new challenge at Stamford Bridge.

WHAT GARNACHO SAID

Speaking to Chelsea’s official website after completing the deal, Garnacho expressed his excitement about joining the Blues. “It’s an incredible moment for my family and me to become part of this great club. I can’t wait to get started,” he said. “I watched the Club World Cup, and joining the world champions is something special – we’re the best team in the world! It feels amazing to be here, and I’m very happy.”

DID YOU KNOW?

A product of Manchester United’s youth academy, Garnacho made his senior debut in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the Premier League back in April 2022. He soon became a key member of the first team, contributing to United’s Carabao Cup triumph in 2022-23 and their FA Cup victory in 2023-24 under Erik ten Hag. However, his relationship with current United boss Ruben Amorim deteriorated, as both Garnacho and Rashford were excluded from the matchday squad for the Manchester derby against City in December 2024. The winger later voiced frustration over being brought on only in the 71st minute during United’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final in May.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR CHELSEA AND MANCHESTER UNITED?

Chelsea are set to return to action after the international break with an away fixture against Brentford in the Premier League on September 13. Meanwhile, Manchester United will face their city rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford the following day, on September 14.
