Scott McTominay’s stature in Scottish football has reached new heights as his remarkable overhead kick against Denmark has been immortalised on a limited edition £20 note. The Bank of Scotland has unveiled this exclusive design to commemorate Scotland’s qualification for the World Cup — their first appearance in 28 years.

A tribute to a milestone achievement

To mark the men’s national team’s long-awaited return to the global stage, the Bank of Scotland has introduced a one-of-a-kind collectible. This initiative celebrates Scotland’s first qualification for the World Cup since 1998, placing McTominay at the centre of the design on the new £20 note.

According to the BBC, the artwork blends the traditional visual elements of Scottish banknotes with a contemporary celebration of the qualifying campaign. The highlight of the note is an image inspired by McTominay’s stunning overhead kick — the opening goal in Scotland’s 4-2 victory against Denmark at Hampden Park — a moment that secured qualification for the 2026 tournament and sent the Tartan Army into jubilation.

McTominay calls it a ‘special’ honour

The goal, a brilliantly executed overhead strike, has already become part of Scottish football folklore, ending a near three-decade wait for the men’s team to return to the World Cup. At the unveiling of the commemorative note, McTominay expressed his deep pride at being chosen for such an extraordinary recognition.

“Playing on the world’s biggest football stage is every player’s dream, and I know how much it means to our supporters,” the midfielder said. “Moments like that belong to everyone who supports the team, so seeing my goal on a Scottish banknote feels truly special.”

Limited edition and charitable purpose

Supporters eager to own one of the so-called “McTominay Twenty” notes will need to move quickly, as only 100 have been printed. Half of these will be available to the public through collector auctions, prize draws, and interactive pop-up events in Edinburgh and Glasgow, where fans can take part in a vault code challenge for a chance to win one.

The initiative also supports a meaningful cause. All proceeds from auctions and prize draws will go to Crisis Scotland, a charity dedicated to ending homelessness. Emma Noble, chair of the Bank of Scotland’s Scottish executive committee, commented: “It has been a privilege to collaborate with Scott on this unique project, and we’re thankful for his role in helping raise funds for Crisis as they work towards ending homelessness across the country.”

Focus turns to the World Cup

As fans admire the new commemorative currency, attention now turns to Scotland’s group stage fixtures for the 2026 World Cup to be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Noble elaborated on the idea behind the note, saying: “Securing qualification in such dramatic fashion is a moment fans will cherish forever, and we wanted to celebrate it in a way that reflects Scotland’s identity. Like football, banknotes are woven into the fabric of our national story, and this limited edition £20 note brings both traditions together with a modern creative touch.”

Scotland’s 2026 World Cup journey is expected to be a defining chapter for the nation. Under manager Steve Clarke, the team will open their campaign against Haiti on 14 June and face Morocco on 19 June in Boston, before a highly anticipated encounter with Brazil on 24 June in Miami.
