Declan Rice is fully focused on ensuring Arsenal finish the job this weekend as they edge closer to ending their long wait for the Premier League title.
The England midfielder is determined not to allow any distractions to derail Arsenal’s pursuit of a successful campaign as they enter the crucial final stretch of the season.
Mikel Arteta’s men battled their way to a hard-fought win over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final, keeping hopes alive of securing a major European trophy.
However, for Declan Rice, the immediate priority remains the Premier League, with another crucial test awaiting him and his teammates this weekend.
With the title race once again in Arsenal’s control, much will depend on Manchester City’s result against Brentford on Saturday. If results go their way, the North London club could even wrap up the title as early as this weekend.
Before that, though, Arsenal must overcome West Ham United on Sunday — a task that could prove tricky, given that the Hammers are battling to avoid relegation and will be desperate for points.
For Rice, this fixture carries added emotional weight. Having come through West Ham’s youth academy and captained the side for several seasons before joining Arsenal in a record-breaking transfer, returning to face his former club is bound to stir mixed feelings.
Speaking to Amazon Prime Video after Arsenal’s Champions League victory, Rice made it clear that he won’t let sentiment interfere with his professional focus this weekend.
He stated, “It’s all to play for, but we have to remain calm and focused. It’s a strange one because we’re through to the Champions League final, but Sunday’s game is massive as well.”
“Without West Ham, there wouldn’t be a me. They gave me a chance when Chelsea didn’t. It’s difficult to see them in the position they’re in right now.”
“But this is football, and I have a job to do on Sunday. It’s the business end of the season.”
Rice has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League during this campaign. Should he play a key role in helping Arsenal secure both the domestic title and the Champions League, his chances of earning individual awards will only grow stronger.
Sunday’s clash with West Ham marks the first of four critical fixtures for Arsenal. Securing the Premier League crown early would significantly boost their confidence and preparation for the European final scheduled at the end of May.
Arsenal will take on West Ham United at the London Stadium on Sunday, May 10, with kick-off at 4:30 pm.
