Jean-Philippe Mateta was overjoyed after his crucial strike handed Crystal Palace their maiden European trophy with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano. The French forward found the net in the second half, sealing a memorable night for the South London outfit at the Red Bull Arena.

Mateta revels in a historic achievement

Crystal Palace’s forward Jean-Philippe Mateta was visibly emotional after his goal clinched the UEFA Conference League title for the Eagles. Speaking moments after the final whistle, the striker reflected on what he described as a dream come true for a club that, not too long ago, would have considered European glory beyond reach.

“I feel fantastic! I feel fantastic! We did it! First time in Europe and we did it. Now I just want to celebrate. This guy [Joel Ward] has to celebrate with us,” Mateta told TNT Sports. The Frenchman emerged as the hero of the evening, producing an instinctive, scrappy finish that proved decisive in a tense final encounter.

Leaving everything on the pitch

The contest tested Crystal Palace’s endurance, with Rayo Vallecano pushing the Premier League team to their limits. Mateta admitted that the relentless energy of the Spanish side forced Oliver Glasner’s men to dig deep and hold on after his second-half goal.

“We gave everything. I told you about the intensity they will have and I am tired right now, I gave everything. That’s why we won today. I am always with the fans. They have supported me a lot as a player. They are always behind us. We did it for them too,” said Mateta. His match-winning strike came when he reacted fastest to a rebound after Adam Wharton’s shot was parried by the Rayo goalkeeper.

Wharton shines in midfield

Although Mateta grabbed the headlines, midfielder Adam Wharton was the orchestrator in the middle of the park, dictating the tempo for much of the match. Despite recently missing out on Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad, the 22-year-old showcased exceptional composure and passing range, keeping the Spanish side under pressure for long stretches.

Wharton nearly picked up an assist earlier when Tyrick Mitchell headed wide from a superb lofted delivery. Ultimately, it was Wharton’s powerful long-range effort that forced the decisive rebound, setting up Mateta’s winning goal and underlining his growing influence.

Glasner’s farewell masterpiece

The triumph marked a storybook ending for manager Oliver Glasner, who has dramatically reshaped Crystal Palace’s fortunes during his reign. Having already led the team to an FA Cup victory over Manchester City the previous season, this European success firmly establishes him as one of the club’s all-time great managers.

Despite missing several chances, including Yeremy Pino’s remarkable free-kick that hit both posts, Palace remained defensively solid to preserve their clean sheet. As the celebrations began, the moment symbolised the club’s remarkable progression — from domestic cup winners to European champions in just one year.
