Barcelona are reportedly preparing to send Marcus Rashford back to Manchester United at the end of the season following a disappointing loan stint at Camp Nou. Although the Spanish club had initially shown interest in signing him permanently, their stance has changed after the 28-year-old failed to make an impact during key fixtures in the Champions League and Copa del Rey.
Rashford’s loan spell nearing its end
As per a report from The Athletic, Barcelona have opted not to activate the €30 million (£26.1m) purchase clause in Rashford’s loan deal. The forward had a promising start in Spain but struggled to maintain consistency as the season progressed, particularly during the club’s crucial exits from both the Champions League and Copa del Rey. Sources within the club revealed that Rashford did not capitalise on his “golden chance” to secure a regular starting position when Raphinha was unavailable, prompting a rethink about his long-term role in Catalonia.
Barcelona’s transfer priorities shift
The Catalan giants had previously held talks with Rashford’s representatives regarding a permanent deal, but his inconsistent form in decisive matches has led to a shift in internal opinion. Although personal terms were reportedly not a hurdle, the coaching team has now turned its focus to exploring other attacking options. This change in approach followed a noticeable dip in Rashford’s performance levels during a critical stretch, leading the club to consider different targets despite earlier discussions about a potential long-term commitment for the Manchester United loanee.
Knockout-stage struggles a major setback
Despite contributing 12 goals and 13 assists in 44 appearances, Rashford’s poor record in knockout competitions has raised concerns. The English forward failed to register a goal or assist in either leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid, a pattern repeated in the Copa del Rey semi-final against the same side. These goalless showings, particularly while he was leading the attack in Raphinha’s absence, have convinced Barcelona’s management that Rashford lacks the decisive edge needed to spearhead their future plans. Julian Alvarez remains one of the club’s top summer targets, with Osasuna’s Victor Munoz also being closely monitored.
Focus on retaining the league crown
For now, Rashford continues to be part of Hansi Flick’s plans as Barcelona aim to clinch a second successive La Liga title, beginning with Saturday’s away fixture against Getafe. Holding a nine-point advantage over Real Madrid with only six matches left, the team’s immediate priority remains domestic success before what is expected to be a busy summer transfer window. Rashford, meanwhile, faces an uncertain return to Old Trafford, where he remains under contract until 2028, unless another club steps forward to meet Manchester United’s valuation.
