Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona hopes fading rapidly

Marcus Rashford may be heading for disappointment in his attempt to extend his dream stay at Barcelona, if recent reports from Spain are anything to go by.

The Manchester-born forward netted 14 goals and provided an equal number of assists as the Blaugrana clinched the La Liga crown.

While manager Hansi Flick seems content with his performances, Barcelona’s hierarchy appear hesitant to activate the Englishman’s purchase clause, which is set at a modest £26 million.

The Catalan club initially requested Manchester United to lower their valuation, later sought another loan deal, and eventually stalled over the payment structure.

Now, with Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon reportedly on his way to Camp Nou, Barcelona’s interest in making Rashford’s move permanent seems to have diminished.

INEOS, Manchester United’s co-owners, are reportedly unperturbed, believing they can fetch a better offer elsewhere. According to SPORT, United’s management may soon need to start offering their academy product to other clubs.

The Catalans are also said to be pursuing long-time target Bernardo Silva, with super-agent Jorge Mendes playing a key role in pushing for the transfer.

If the Portuguese international seals a move to Barcelona, it could effectively end Rashford’s chances of staying. With a return to Old Trafford also unlikely, questions remain over where his next destination could be.

“Bernardo Silva is waiting for Barça, although he also has another offer from La Liga. It’s from Atlético de Madrid.

“It’s also worth noting that the arrival of Bernardo Silva would completely rule out Rashford, who has played this season at Camp Nou on loan from Manchester United, from continuing at Barça.

“With the addition of the Portuguese star and the confirmed signing of Anthony Gordon, there would be no space in the squad for the English winger.”

Meanwhile, Manchester United are also looking for reinforcements on the left side, though their focus is expected to be on securing a left-back rather than a left winger, following the rise of Patrick Dorgu.
