PONTIANAK – The excitement is building as the world’s most prestigious football event, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, draws near. The football fever has begun to sweep through the Equatorial City, including Pontianak’s Mayor, Edi Rusdi Kamtono.
The Mayor of Pontianak predicts that the battles on the pitches of the United States, Mexico, and Canada will be fierce, full of surprises, and far more competitive than the previous edition.
When asked about his favourite team, Edi Kamtono didn’t hesitate to express his continued support for the Spanish National Team.
Under the guidance of Luis de la Fuente, La Roja have been impressive, showcasing a strong blend of experienced players and emerging talents such as wonderkid Lamine Yamal.

“For me, Spain is still my number one,” said Edi Kamtono enthusiastically on Friday, 29 May 2026.
However, he also acknowledged the strength of other teams. Edi believes that the England National Team has a strong chance of lifting the golden trophy this year.
His main reason? The high quality of the English Premier League, which he considers the best league in the world today.
“My second pick would be England this time. In recent years, the Premier League has become more exciting, more competitive, more balanced, and more entertaining,” he added.
Edi is confident that the euphoria of this first-ever 48-nation World Cup will be strongly felt in Indonesia, especially in Pontianak.
He noted that preparations for public viewing events (nobar) have already begun to appear in various corners of the city.
