Joao Palhinha is reportedly prepared to accept a notable reduction in his wages to finalise a move back to his former club, Sporting CP, this summer. After playing a crucial role in helping Tottenham Hotspur remain in the Premier League during a tough loan spell, the Bayern Munich midfielder has made clear his desire to return to the club where his professional journey began.
A long-awaited homecoming to Alvalade
Palhinha has become Sporting’s prime target as they prepare to reinforce their midfield ahead of the 2026-2027 campaign. The 30-year-old, currently on loan at Tottenham from Bayern Munich, is seen as the ideal successor to captain Morten Hjulmand, who is expected to leave the Lisbon side in the upcoming transfer window. Talks are already in progress to bring the Portuguese international back to Alvalade, where he previously earned hero status among supporters.
According to reports from A Bola, Sporting’s management and head coach Rui Borges have specifically requested Palhinha’s return. Although the deal poses financial challenges given the player’s valuation, the emotional connection to Sporting and his wish to be closer to family in Portugal have motivated the midfielder to push for the move. To make the transfer possible, Palhinha is said to be willing to accept a drastic pay cut, bringing his salary down to its lowest feasible level.
Financial hurdles to overcome
The major challenge in securing Palhinha’s return remains his high wages. Under contract with Bayern Munich until June 2028, the midfielder currently earns around €9 million annually before taxes — an amount far beyond the reach of Portuguese clubs. Therefore, his readiness to lower his salary is being seen as a crucial step in enabling the move.
Sporting are now exploring ways to persuade Bayern to part with the player. The Lions are considering two primary options: negotiating a transfer fee that aligns with their financial capacity or arranging a loan deal that includes an option to buy later. Since Palhinha’s personal terms are no longer an obstacle owing to his strong desire to return home, discussions have now shifted entirely to negotiations between the two clubs.
How the Tottenham loan shaped his standing
Despite Tottenham’s difficult Premier League season, Palhinha’s reputation remains intact. Spurs endured a turbulent campaign, finishing 17th and only managing to avoid relegation on the final matchday. Yet, the Portuguese midfielder stood out as one of the few positives, contributing seven goals and two assists in 45 appearances across all competitions. Although Palhinha had earlier expressed his wish to stay in North London, A Bola now reports that his focus has turned towards a return to Portugal.
De Zerbi’s stance on Palhinha’s future
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has openly expressed his intent to retain Palhinha beyond his loan spell. The Italian coach has urged the club to activate the £26 million purchase clause included in the Bayern loan agreement, describing the midfielder as a key component in Tottenham’s rebuilding project for next season.
De Zerbi has repeatedly praised Palhinha’s professionalism and leadership during what was a challenging campaign for Spurs. Emphasising the midfielder’s importance, he remarked, “One hundred per cent; we have to start with those types of people,” when asked about keeping Palhinha permanently. However, with Sporting pushing strongly for his signature, it remains to be seen whether Tottenham will compete with the Portuguese club to retain him.
