Former Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum is preparing for a new chapter in his career after Al-Ettifaq confirmed his release. The seasoned Netherlands international will become a free agent this summer following a mutual agreement to terminate his contract in Dammam.

Al-Ettifaq announce contract termination

The Saudi Pro League side officially announced on Monday that they had mutually agreed to part ways with Wijnaldum. The 35-year-old, who joined the club in 2023, saw his deal ended largely due to financial adjustments within the team’s current framework.

Although he was signed as a marquee player to spearhead the club’s project, both parties have opted to pursue separate paths ahead of the 2026-27 season.

The decision brings to a close a fairly successful stint for the Dutch midfielder in Saudi Arabia. While several European imports struggled to adapt to the demands of the league, Wijnaldum proved to be a steady performer in Al-Ettifaq’s starting lineup, frequently acting as the crucial link between midfield and the attacking front.

Nevertheless, with the club aiming to manage expenses and revamp its foreign player slots, the former Newcastle United man was earmarked for release.

Strong performances in the Saudi Pro League

Wijnaldum’s exit may surprise some, considering his impact during the previous campaign. The midfielder rediscovered his scoring touch, captaining the side and setting an example for his teammates as Al-Ettifaq finished seventh in the league table.

Over the course of the season, the veteran netted 16 goals and contributed seven assists across 33 league appearances.

Possible Premier League comeback?

Now a free agent, Wijnaldum is expected to draw attention from clubs across Europe and beyond. His credentials remain impressive, having lifted both the Premier League and the Champions League during his tenure in England. Reports indicate that the midfielder is not contemplating retirement and is instead keen on embracing another competitive challenge that keeps him in the spotlight of elite football.

Rumours are already circulating about a possible return to English football. It is believed that Wijnaldum is open to rejoining the Premier League, where he is still highly regarded. Given his experience and the fact that no transfer fee is required, several clubs seeking leadership and midfield stability might be tempted to sign the former Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven player on a short-term deal.

International aspirations and career outlook

Despite his club achievements, Wijnaldum recently faced a setback concerning his international career. The midfielder had expressed a strong ambition to continue representing the Netherlands, aiming for participation in the 2026 World Cup. However, national team coach Ronald Koeman reportedly prefers to transition towards younger talents in the Dutch midfield, suggesting a new direction for the Oranje setup.
