Manchester United reportedly plan to offload Marcus Rashford this summer

Manchester United’s efforts to overhaul their squad ahead of the upcoming season appear to hinge on one unresolved matter — the future of Marcus Rashford.

As reported by the Mirror, what initially seemed like a straightforward permanent transfer to Barcelona has become increasingly complicated. The Spanish champions were understood to have agreed to sign Rashford following his impressive loan spell, with a £24 million deal expected to finalise the move. However, talks have since stalled, leaving United in a position of uncertainty at a critical moment in the transfer window.

Barcelona’s stance appears to have changed after they committed a significant sum elsewhere. Their reported £70 million move for Anthony Gordon has reshaped their financial priorities, leading the club to reconsider the terms of Rashford’s proposed transfer.

Manchester United, however, remain firm in their position. Reports suggest the club have rejected any suggestion of another season-long loan, a lower transfer fee, or a heavily staggered payment plan.

Such a stance is understandable. Having spent months planning around Rashford’s permanent exit, United’s management require clarity, especially as they look to support Michael Carrick in his debut season as head coach.

Rashford remains under contract with the club until 2028 and is among United’s top earners, with wages of approximately £325,000 per week.

For Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the club’s football leadership structure, removing such a substantial salary from the books would allow more flexibility in the transfer market. The belief that Barcelona would complete the deal has also seemingly influenced United’s wider recruitment strategy.

The ongoing deadlock could therefore have implications beyond just Rashford’s individual case.

United’s problem is that potential alternative buyers are unlikely to match the £24 million figure already on the table. Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur are all reportedly keeping an eye on the situation, though each option comes with its own set of challenges.

As for Rashford himself, reports indicate that he has little desire to restart his career at Manchester United.

His spell in Spain was fruitful — he registered 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances for Barcelona, also building a strong working relationship with Hansi Flick.

That level of performance suggests that Rashford remains a top-quality player despite the turbulence of recent seasons. Yet, as often in football, timing can be as crucial as talent.

With England preparing for the World Cup and Rashford currently training in the United States ahead of Thomas Tuchel’s squad assembly, there is a growing sense that a decisive moment is approaching. Whether Barcelona return to their original agreement or another club steps forward could determine not only Rashford’s future but also Manchester United’s entire summer transfer strategy.

For months, it was widely assumed that Rashford’s situation had been resolved. His successful stint at Barcelona appeared mutually beneficial — the player was thriving, the Spanish club were benefiting from his contributions, and United stood to gain a transfer fee while shedding a significant wage obligation.

However, the longer the uncertainty persists, the more problematic it becomes.

United are attempting to usher in a new era under Michael Carrick, and their transfer planning depends heavily on financial stability. If club executives were counting on funds from Rashford’s sale, those calculations are now harder to finalise amid stalled negotiations.

Many fans also sympathise with Rashford. Regardless of differing opinions on his final years at Old Trafford, he remains a player who gave considerable service to the club and now appears eager to move ahead with the next stage of his career.

Barcelona’s attempts to renegotiate the terms may not go down well among United supporters, who believe that an agreement was already in place and should be honoured.

The ideal resolution remains a permanent transfer to Spain. It would bring closure for all parties involved and enable Manchester United to fully focus on strengthening their squad for the new season. Until then, this unresolved deal threatens to overshadow what should be a summer devoted to progress and rebuilding.
