Expectations for yet another hike in the Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees and pensioners have risen once again. The AICPI-IW data for April 2026, released by the Labour Bureau, indicates that the Dearness Allowance—set to be effective from July 2026—could see an increase of up to 3 percent. Although the final decision will only be made after the data for May and June 2026 becomes available, current trends bring welcome news for employees.
According to the Labour Bureau, the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) rose to 149.9 points in April 2026, up from 149.1 points in March 2026. During the same period, the inflation rate also increased from 4.27 percent to 4.46 percent. This rise in the index is considered a crucial factor in the calculation of the upcoming Dearness Allowance.
Why is the AICPI-IW Important for DA Calculation?
The Central Government calculates the Dearness Allowance for its employees based on the average AICPI-IW data over 12 months. For the DA revision effective from July 2026, data spanning from July 2025 to June 2026 will be taken into account. Currently, the average AICPI-IW index recorded for the period from May 2025 to April 2026 stands at 147.51.
DA Could Reach 63 Percent
Based on the currently available data, a calculation of the Dearness Allowance yields a figure of approximately 62.51 percent. As per the rules, this figure is rounded off to the nearest integer, which could potentially push the DA rate up to 63 percent. Currently, central government employees are receiving a Dearness Allowance of 60 percent. If this projection proves accurate, employees will receive an additional 3 percent in Dearness Allowance.
What Will Be the Impact on Employees' Salaries?
If a Level-5 employee has a basic salary of ₹29,200, they currently receive a Dearness Allowance of ₹17,520 based on the 60 percent rate. With the DA rising to 63 percent, this amount will reach ₹18,396. This implies an increase of approximately ₹876 in the employee's monthly income. This is expected to directly benefit lakhs of central government employees and pensioners. Although the figures for April indicate a 3 percent hike in DA, the final picture will become clear only after the release of the AICPI-IW data for May and June 2026. Subsequently, the Central Government will officially announce the revision in the Dearness Allowance.
