Four years ago, on International Yoga Day, Eknath Shinde's actions dominated headlines, casting doubt on the political future of the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition in Maharashtra. Shinde's rebellion, alongside 40 legislators, resulted in the ousting of Uddhav Thackeray from power and fractured the party. Currently, political speculation is intensifying regarding the possibility of a reunion between the factions led by Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde. This question has emerged as prominent leaders from both sides have begun advocating for unity. Interestingly, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which was once a point of contention for Shiv Sena, is now being labeled as a significant threat by some leaders from both factions.
According to a report from a major news outlet, senior leaders from both Uddhav Thackeray's and Eknath Shinde's factions have hinted at the need for discussions about reunification. This dialogue comes at a time when the BJP's influence in Maharashtra politics appears to be growing. The conversation was sparked by statements from Shiv Sena UBT leader Ambadas Danve and senior Shinde faction leader Abdul Sattar. When asked about the potential for the two factions to reunite, Danve expressed that he often feels this way, but mere desire is not enough to effect change. This indicates that some leaders within Uddhav's camp are now openly considering the possibility of reuniting the party's divided factions. Similarly, Sattar echoed this sentiment, stating that now is the time for unity.
To understand the current dynamics, it's essential to recall that in 2022, Eknath Shinde's rebellion led to a split within the Shiv Sena, resulting in two distinct factions. The original Shiv Sena can be referred to as the undivided Shiv Sena. Since then, both factions have been embroiled in legal battles and disputes with the Election Commission. The ongoing discussions about unity among leaders from both sides are being interpreted as a significant political message, especially as senior leaders from Shinde's faction affirm the appropriateness of this timing. Danve has pointed out that the BJP is gradually undermining its coalition partners, claiming that the larger fish swallows the smaller ones, a strategy he believes the BJP is employing against the NCP and Shiv Sena.
Danve further asserted that the BJP aims to eliminate the Shiv Sena, viewing it not just as a political rival but as an adversary. He suggested that those who previously left the undivided Shiv Sena might now be realizing the implications of their decisions. Meanwhile, Abdul Sattar from Shinde's faction also pointed to the BJP, questioning the rationale behind discussing unity if their 'big brother' is intent on their downfall. The term 'big brother' reflects a dynamic where a stronger entity exerts dominance over a smaller one, highlighting the precarious position of the Shiv Sena factions in the current political climate.
