The Indonesia national football team will face a tough challenge when they host Oman in an international friendly on the FIFA Matchday of June 2026 at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) in Jakarta, on Friday (5 June 2026) at 20:00 WIB.

This match serves as an important part of the Garuda squad’s preparation before their next FIFA Matchday fixture against Mozambique on 9 June.

Both Indonesia and Oman enter this match with less-than-convincing form after failing to progress beyond the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.

Indonesia had to concede to the superiority of Iraq and Saudi Arabia, while Oman suffered defeat against Qatar and only managed a draw against the United Arab Emirates.

Despite missing out on the World Cup, both teams have already secured their places in the 2027 Asian Cup, which will be hosted in Saudi Arabia.

Under the leadership of coach John Herdman, Indonesia is in the process of rebuilding its performance following the end of Patrick Kluivert’s tenure in October 2025.

In two friendly matches so far, Herdman has recorded one win and one loss — a 4-0 victory over St. Kitts and Nevis and a narrow 0-1 defeat to Bulgaria.

Overall, Indonesia’s recent form has been underwhelming. Out of their last 13 matches, the Garuda squad has only managed four wins, suffered seven defeats, and struggled to find the back of the net on several occasions.

The head-to-head record also hasn’t favoured Indonesia. In their last four encounters with Oman, Indonesia has never won — recording three losses and one draw. Their most recent meeting in 2021 in Dubai ended with a 1-3 defeat for Indonesia.

However, ahead of this fixture, Herdman noted that his players have shown positive progress throughout the training camp.

“Their intensity has been excellent, and they quickly regained the team’s rhythm. We’ve also been able to reinforce what worked well and fix the areas that need improvement,” said Herdman, as quoted by Kita Garuda.

The Canadian coach regards the match against Oman as an important benchmark to assess the team’s growth, considering that their opponent is more experienced at the Asian level.

“Oman is a seasoned team that knows how to win matches in this confederation. Our challenge is to learn how to beat teams with that level of quality,” he added.

Head-to-Head Record

Based on statistics and previous meetings, Oman remains the favourite to achieve a positive result. However, home support at Gelora Bung Karno is expected to provide the necessary motivation for Indonesia to push for a victory.

A win over Oman could also improve Indonesia’s position in the FIFA rankings.

If the Garuda squad secures all three points, they could move closer to the 118th spot in the world, potentially overtaking teams like Togo, Namibia, Sierra Leone, and North Korea, depending on the results of other nations during the same period.
