Liverpool’s summer transfer strategy has taken a setback after Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig expressed his deep admiration for Paris Saint-Germain. The young winger, widely seen as the top candidate to fill Mohamed Salah’s shoes at Anfield, has hinted that his heart may be set on a switch to the Parc des Princes rather than Merseyside.

Childhood connection draws Diomande towards Paris

The pursuit of RB Leipzig’s teenage prodigy has taken an unexpected twist after the 19-year-old revealed his long-standing passion for the reigning European champions. Despite heavy Premier League interest, Diomande has made no secret of his desire to return to France, attributing family ties as a key factor behind his preference.

“My future? I have a team that manages that,” Diomande commented. “I try to stay focused on my game. I’ve loved PSG since I was a kid. I believe my father was also a PSG fan. But right now, I’m not thinking about the future — my focus is on the World Cup. We’ll see what happens after that.”

Liverpool’s plans to replace Salah face major hurdle

This revelation poses a serious challenge for Liverpool, who had marked Diomande as their prime long-term successor to the departing Salah. The Reds’ interest comes on the back of a stellar 2025-26 season in which the winger recorded 20 goal contributions across 33 Bundesliga matches and topped the league charts with an extraordinary 118 successful dribbles.

However, with the youngster’s preference leaning strongly toward a move back to France, PSG are reportedly in pole position to land him after reports surfaced of a verbal understanding between the club and the player’s camp.

Defensive exits deepen Liverpool’s transfer concerns

Diomande’s possible move to France is just one of several issues now confronting Liverpool’s recruitment team. The club has already been hit by a wave of departures, leaving significant gaps that need urgent attention before the new season commences.

In a surprising twist, France international Ibrahima Konate has confirmed his exit from Anfield and is said to be nearing a sensational free transfer to Real Madrid. With Mohamed Salah and veteran left-back Andrew Robertson also on their way out, Liverpool’s need to rebuild has become even more pressing — making Diomande’s likely snub all the more damaging.

Focus on the World Cup campaign

For now, Diomande remains focused on leading Ivory Coast at the upcoming World Cup. The Elephants are drawn in Group E alongside Germany, Ecuador, and Curacao, and the Leipzig attacker is expected to play a pivotal role in their attacking setup.

While Diomande concentrates on his international duties, his representatives continue to engage in negotiations behind the scenes. PSG, seeking a dynamic right-sided winger to strengthen their attacking options, appear well placed to secure his signature this summer — potentially forcing Liverpool to shift their attention toward alternative targets as they plan for life after Salah.
