Spanish coach Pep Guardiola is reportedly set to turn down an opportunity for a sensational reunion with football icon Lionel Messi, following his departure from Manchester City.

According to reports from the Mirror, Sir David Beckham had approached Guardiola to take charge of Inter Miami, identifying him as the preferred candidate to replace Javier Mascherano, who stepped down from his managerial duties last month.

Guardiola and Messi enjoyed an immensely successful spell together at Barcelona, securing three La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies. However, the much-anticipated reunion appears unlikely, as the Spaniard is expected to reject the approach from Inter Miami to become the Major League Soccer (MLS) club’s new manager.

Beckham and the Inter Miami management have been deliberate in their search for Mascherano’s successor, hoping Guardiola might be persuaded after concluding his illustrious tenure at Manchester City.

Despite the appeal of managing Messi again, Guardiola has reportedly made it clear that he intends to take an extended break from football, following his trophy-laden decade with Manchester City.

The 53-year-old is said to be considering an international coaching role as his next career move. Sources close to him suggest that international football could be his next challenge.

Guardiola had previously drawn interest from the Football Association (FA), who were exploring the possibility of appointing him after Gareth Southgate’s resignation in 2024. However, due to his then-existing contract with City, a deal could not be finalised.

During his ten-year reign at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola dominated English football, winning six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups, and one UEFA Champions League crown. Given his stature and ambitions, a move to MLS at this stage of his career seems improbable.

Meanwhile, Inter Miami continue their search for a new head coach as the MLS season progresses, with Beckham’s dream of reuniting Guardiola and Messi now appearing out of reach.
