Manchester United have officially announced that experienced goalkeeper Tom Heaton has signed a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford. The former England international, who rejoined his boyhood club in 2021, will continue as part of the senior squad for the upcoming season.
A pillar in the dressing room
By extending Heaton’s contract, United have ensured that one of their most seasoned professionals remains a central figure at Carrington. The 40-year-old shot-stopper has committed to another year with the club where he began his career as an academy player, extending his second spell with the Red Devils.
Heaton has earned widespread recognition for his leadership and influence off the pitch, acting as a crucial link between the coaching staff and playing group. Since rejoining in 2021, he has lifted the Carabao Cup with United and become an invaluable presence in the dressing room. The club sees his leadership as instrumental in maintaining discipline and high standards among the players.
Wilcox praises Heaton’s professionalism
Director of football Jason Wilcox underlined the immense value Heaton brings beyond matchdays. Although the veteran goalkeeper has made just three first-team appearances since returning—two in the 2022-23 Carabao Cup and one in the 2021-22 Champions League—his consistent work ethic and mentoring role have been deeply appreciated within the club’s hierarchy.
“We are thrilled that Tom will be staying for another year. Everyone recognises the importance of his leadership and professionalism within the team,” Wilcox commented. “Tom has played a significant part in supporting Senne [Lammens] during his first Premier League season. His dedication and mindset set an excellent benchmark for our goalkeeping unit.”
A notable career milestone
With this renewal, Heaton is about to embark on his 21st season as a professional footballer. His career has come full circle, having left United as a young player to gain experience with clubs such as Cardiff City and Bristol City, before cementing his reputation at Burnley and later Aston Villa, ultimately returning to Old Trafford, famously known as the Theatre of Dreams.
Expressing his delight at the new deal, Heaton said: “It is a tremendous honour to keep representing Manchester United. You can sense the hunger and ambition running through every part of the club to chase success. I am eager to continue contributing to our journey and help the group compete for the highest achievements.”
Maintaining standards in Manchester
The decision to retain Heaton arrives at a vital juncture for United under manager Michael Carrick, who led the team back into the Champions League after clinching third place in the 2025-26 Premier League season. During this transitional phase, the presence of experienced heads like Heaton is crucial to guide emerging talents. Having begun his professional journey on loan at Swindon Town in 2005, Heaton’s depth of experience offers invaluable mentorship for the younger goalkeepers within the squad.
