TRIBUN-PAPUA.COM, NABIRE – The Regent of Nabire, Mesak Magai, has announced his support for the Senegal National Team in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is set to begin on 12 June 2026. Mesak explained that his main reason for supporting the team nicknamed the Lions of Teranga is to express solidarity among people of African descent.
"I hope the pride of black people continues to prevail," said Mesak in an interview with Tribun-Papua.com on Friday (5 June 2026).
To accommodate the growing enthusiasm of the community, the Nabire Government plans to organise a series of public viewing events (Nobar) using a videotron truck.
The schedule for these viewing sessions will cover several locations, including East Nabire in the city centre, West Nabire, and Wanggar.
Although he fully supports the tournament, Mesak reminded residents to maintain public security and order (Kamtibmas).
He emphasised that unity and togetherness in the region should remain a top priority, above football fanaticism.
"The matches are happening far away, and we are only supporters here. So, let’s keep our community safe and peaceful," he stressed.
For reference, the Senegal National Team is placed in Group I of the 2026 World Cup alongside France, Norway, and Iraq. Senegal is expected to bring its strongest squad, featuring top players such as goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, defender Kalidou Koulibaly, midfielder Pape Matar Sarr, and strikers Sadio Mane and Nicolas Jackson.
