Portuguese Fans Hope Cristiano Ronaldo Ends His Career with World Cup Glory

Rihel, Head of the National Unity and Political Agency (Kesbangpol) of East Kotawaringin Regency, expressed his excitement for the world’s biggest football tournament.

For Rihel, the 2026 FIFA World Cup holds special significance compared to previous editions, as it is likely to be the last time fans will see two of football’s greatest icons — Lionel Messi of Argentina and Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal — compete on the world stage.

“This could be the final World Cup for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. For more than a decade, I’ve enjoyed watching their brilliance. They are undoubtedly two of the greatest players in modern football history,” Rihel said on Thursday (4 June 2026).

While Messi has already achieved the ultimate glory with Argentina in the previous edition, Rihel hopes Ronaldo can replicate that success before concluding his international career.

“I hope Cristiano Ronaldo gets his moment this year. It would be a beautiful story if he could lead Portugal to their first-ever World Cup title,” he added.

Rihel believes Portugal have a strong chance in the 2026 tournament, citing the team’s balanced squad depth across all positions, particularly in midfield, which he considers their main strength.

He mentioned players such as Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, Joao Neves, and Nuno Mendes as key figures capable of making a difference for Portugal.

Additionally, Portugal also rely on striker Goncalo Ramos, who is expected to spearhead their attack.

“Portugal’s squad depth is excellent. Almost every position is filled with top-quality players. Their midfield, in my opinion, is one of the best in the world right now,” Rihel said.

Besides Portugal, Rihel also believes Argentina remain one of the strongest contenders for the title. The presence of Lionel Messi continues to inspire the Albiceleste, giving them a psychological and tactical edge.

Rihel also highlighted the impressive performances of several Portuguese players who have been successful with their clubs throughout the season, including those playing for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), who won multiple domestic and European titles.

According to him, these achievements provide Portugal with valuable momentum heading into the 2026 World Cup.

“Portugal are in peak form. Many of their players enter the tournament with high confidence after achieving success with their clubs,” he explained.

Although he is backing Portugal, Rihel acknowledged that the battle for the 2026 World Cup crown will be fiercely competitive.

“No matter who wins, I hope this World Cup serves as a fitting farewell for the greatest generation of footballers the world has ever seen,” he concluded.

Argentinian Fans in Palangka Raya Hope Lionel Messi and Team Defend Their World Cup Title

In Palangka Raya, Argentina supporter Sastra Wijaya Kalontong shared his views, naming three national teams that could pose serious challenges to Argentina’s campaign at the 2026 World Cup.

“The three toughest opponents for Argentina will be Portugal, France, and Spain,” he said.

Despite the competition, Sastra Wijaya expressed confidence in the squad led by coach Lionel Scaloni.

“Under Lionel Scaloni’s leadership, Argentina have maintained their solid identity — disciplined, cohesive, and full of champion mentality,” he stated.

“This team no longer relies solely on one player but thrives on teamwork, balance across positions, and improved squad depth.”

“The inclusion of young players adds new energy, ensuring Argentina remain competitive in an increasingly intense field,” he added.

Sastra Wijaya believes Argentina have a strong chance of winning back-to-back World Cup titles in 2026, given their experience and team chemistry.

“Besides Lionel Messi, two players I expect to shine at the 2026 World Cup are Lisandro Martinez and Julian Alvarez,” he said.

As a devoted Argentina fan, Sastra admitted that watching Messi’s final World Cup appearance will stir mixed emotions.

“Of course, I’ll feel proud to have witnessed the best player of all time wearing the Albiceleste jersey, but also sad because an extraordinary era will come to an end,” he said.

“Every touch of the ball, every goal, every assist will be treasured memories. When the final whistle blows, it will feel like saying goodbye to a legend who turned Argentina’s dreams into reality,” he added emotionally.
