The Portugal national football team has received an unwelcome piece of news just days before beginning their campaign at the 2026 World Cup.

Star forward Rafael Leao is facing the threat of suspension after being shown a straight red card in a friendly match against Chile on Sunday (7 June 2026) early morning local time.

The incident occurred during Portugal’s home fixture against Chile at Estadio Nacional do Jamor in Oeiras. The match was meant to serve as a crucial part of Roberto Martinez’s squad preparation ahead of the world’s biggest football tournament.

However, Portugal's victory was overshadowed by controversy surrounding one of their key players.

Clash Breaks Out Before Half-Time

The match was fiercely contested from the start. With the score still level at 0-0, tensions began to rise during first-half injury time.

The confrontation began with a tussle near the corner flag involving Joao Cancelo and Chilean right-back Felipe Faundez. What started as a minor dispute quickly escalated as other players became involved.

Rafael Leao, who was nearby, got into a shoving altercation with Chile defender Ivan Roman.

The situation intensified when Leao appeared to swing his arm toward Roman’s face. Italian referee Luca Zufferli immediately intervened and issued red cards to both players.

Cristiano Ronaldo attempted to calm the situation and engaged in a brief discussion with the referee, but the decision stood. As a result, Leao was sent off before the end of the first half.

Despite being reduced to ten men, Portugal managed to secure the win.

The Selecao defeated Chile 2-1, thanks to goals from Goncalo Guedes and Bruno Fernandes.

The result provided a morale boost ahead of the 2026 World Cup. However, Portuguese fans are now anxiously awaiting news about Rafael Leao’s fate.

The 27-year-old’s red card could have bigger consequences than merely missing one friendly match.

Possible Additional Sanction from FIFA

According to Goal International, red cards received in friendly matches typically apply only to subsequent friendlies and do not carry over into official competitions.

However, Leao’s case is different as it was classified as violent conduct toward an opponent.

Such an offense may be reviewed by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee, which has the authority to impose further sanctions if deemed necessary.

If FIFA decides to extend the suspension, Leao could miss Portugal’s opening matches at the 2026 World Cup.

At present, no official ruling has been made regarding any additional punishment for the player.

On the other hand, reports suggest that Leao remains optimistic about featuring in the tournament.

He is expected to serve only a one-match ban during the upcoming friendly against Nigeria scheduled for 10 June.

If that scenario plays out, Leao will be available for Portugal’s first group-stage match of the 2026 World Cup against DR Congo on 17 June.

His presence will be vital, especially as Portugal find themselves in a challenging group alongside DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia.

Rafael Leao is one of the most crucial components in Roberto Martinez’s tactical setup.

His speed, dribbling ability, and creativity on the wings make him one of Portugal’s primary attacking weapons capable of breaking down stubborn defenses.

Awaiting FIFA’s Verdict

For now, Portugal must wait for an official decision from FIFA regarding the incident.

A single moment of frustration in a friendly could have major implications for Leao’s World Cup journey.

For Portugal, losing one of their best players at the start of the tournament would be a scenario they desperately want to avoid. The Selecao are determined to claim their first-ever World Cup title.

All eyes are now on FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee. Will Rafael Leao escape with a light punishment, or will he be forced to miss the initial matches of the World Cup?

Klaten Regent Backs Portugal to Win

The Regent of Klaten, Hamenang Wajar Ismoyo, has declared his support for Portugal in the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

He expressed confidence that the Selecao will go all the way, describing the tournament as Cristiano Ronaldo’s “last dance” on the world stage.

“Portugal, of course, because it’s Ronaldo’s last dance,” said Hamenang, as quoted by TribunJogja.com.

According to him, Portugal have a strong chance of progressing from the group stage, as their opponents are not as tough as in other groups.

Portugal have been drawn in Group K alongside Colombia, Uzbekistan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In addition to Ronaldo, the Portuguese squad features several star players such as Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias, Vitinha, Joao Felix, and Rafael Leao.

“Yes, I believe Portugal’s group looks easier on paper compared to others, giving them more than an 80 percent chance of advancing from the group stage,” he said.

Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the competition for the title will remain intense.

He named France, Brazil, and Spain as Portugal’s main challengers for the trophy while noting that there could again be surprise teams, as seen in previous World Cups.

“France, Brazil, Spain — but as always, there’s bound to be a surprise team. Let’s wait and see which one it will be this time,” he added.
