Abdoulaye Camara appears poised to follow in the footsteps of Patrick Vieira and Paul Pogba — could the next great French talent already be honing his craft in Serie A?

When it became apparent that Abdoulaye Camara would depart Montpellier in France, several clubs raced to secure his services.

Udinese ultimately clinched the signing despite interest from Juventus and clubs in the Bundesliga. Yet, the former France under-17 captain has not yet featured for the Bianconeri, as the Italian side have taken a patient approach — planning a two-to-three-year development period and giving him consistent minutes in Primavera 2.

With Camara having been an unused substitute in nearly 20 Serie A games this season, here’s a detailed scout report on the young midfielder.

Name: Abdoulaye Camara Position(s): Defensive midfield, central midfield Age: 17 (Born: September 28, 2008) Nationality: French Height: 1.88m (6ft 2in) Preferred Foot: Right Current Club: Udinese

The Watford-linked club Udinese clearly identified something unique in the Guinea-born Camara, moving swiftly to sign him before his breakout moment — much as they did with 20-year-old Colombian full-back Juan Arizala, 19-year-old Senegalese centre-forward Idrissa Gueye, and teenage Scottish midfielder Lennon Miller from Motherwell. The club has also partnered with analytics firm Driblab, making their recent signings even more fascinating to observe.

Camara easily impressed the scouts with his performances. A defensive midfielder molded in the image of recent French midfield standouts such as Aurelien Tchouameni, Ayyoub Bouaddi, and Warren Zaire-Emery, the 17-year-old combines physical dominance with the technical finesse required to dictate play in tight spaces.

Interception radar and tackling ability: Comparisons with Eduardo Camavinga are natural given Camara’s sharp positional awareness and ability to stretch out his long legs to intercept passes. The teenager consistently finds himself in ideal defensive positions and displays excellent timing when sliding in for tackles.

Press resistance and technical composure: Standing over six feet tall and still just 17, Camara moves with surprising agility. His quick feet allow him to escape pressure using subtle drag-backs and neat ‘croqueta’-style touches to retain possession.

Line-breaking passing: Far from being a conservative distributor, Camara shows a willingness to take risks with progressive passes — threading balls between lines or into channels. At times, he evokes memories of a young Patrick Vieira with his forward-thinking approach.

Maturity and mentality: Already a youth captain for France, Camara has earned praise for his professionalism and poise on and off the pitch. Rejecting lucrative offers to join a mid-table Italian side intent on nurturing his development over three seasons demonstrates his mature outlook.

Aerial strength and physical presence: Camara is a formidable figure in midfield, strong in aerial duels and physically robust — traits that will help him adapt smoothly to senior football’s demands.

Senior-level experience: Despite excelling at youth level, Camara has yet to make his senior debut for Udinese. At 17, he will undoubtedly face challenges as he transitions to top-flight football, but his development will depend more on mental sharpness than physical growth.

Discipline and over-commitment: Like many young players, Camara occasionally shows excessive eagerness to regain possession, leading to rash challenges. This aspect of his game will need refinement as he matures.

Contribution in the final third: For Camara to evolve into a genuine box-to-box midfielder, he must improve his precision in attacking areas. While already a key figure in build-up play, he could use his intelligence and positioning to develop a knack for late runs into the opposition box.

Midfielders: Mikel Jauregizar, Ezechiel Banzuzi, Rodri Mendoza.

At present, Camara’s primary aim is to establish himself at Udinese without rushing his progress. Given his physical tools and mental maturity, the vision of him becoming a Champions League-calibre defensive midfielder within five years is entirely realistic. With refinement and continued patience, a senior debut before the season’s end — followed by more appearances next term — seems a natural next step.
