Imtiaz Ali shared a strange incident that happened to him during college, when a gang of people picked him up from the hostel due to a dispute over a political poster.
Imtiaz Ali completed his graduation from Hindu College in 1993. During a recent conversation, he recalled an incident from his college days and how a minor dispute on campus turned into a fight that lasted till late night. Because of this fight, the college gang kidnapped him. But in the end he escaped.
Imtiaz Ali said, "At that time, there was enmity between NSUI and ABVP in the university. Someone had put a poster on the wall of my hostel. I told them not to put it in the front of the hostel, but on the side walls. They deliberately pasted it on the front wall. In front of them, I removed it and put it on the side and then went away. After a few days, around 2 in the night, a friend of my hostel came and asked me to run away. They were coming. Then they came and said, 'Come with us.' “I asked where, but they brought a cycle rickshaw to take me.”
The filmmaker told that the group forced him into a rickshaw and took him to a place like government quarters. Describing his escape from there, Imtiaz said, "The gang leader asked one of his men whether I had torn the poster. He replied, 'It is the same thing. Whether he removed it or tore it, it is the same thing.' The gang leader got angry and said, 'You told me that he tore the poster and now you are saying that he just removed it?' An argument broke out between them and the gang leader slapped his own man twice for lying. This is how I escaped from there.”
