A powerful earthquake of 7.8 magnitude occurred in Mindanao, the southern island of the Philippines, on Monday. After the earthquake, a tsunami warning has been issued in many coastal areas of the Philippines and Indonesia. People living on the sea shore have been advised to move to safe places immediately.

According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake occurred at a depth of only 10 km from the ground. An earthquake occurring at a shallow depth causes more ground shaking and increases the risk of tsunami. GFZ had earlier reported its intensity as 7.3, then it was increased to 8.2 and later revised to 7.8. Many buildings were turned into debris due to the earthquake. A school building was also seen collapsing.

Tsunami alert for north-eastern region

The American Tsunami Warning System issued an alert immediately after the earthquake. It was said that dangerous sea waves can reach the coastal areas of the region. After this, Indonesia's Geophysics Agency also issued a tsunami warning for the north-eastern coastal areas of the country and asked people to remain alert.

Philippines' government agency PHIVOLCS has warned that tsunami waves up to one meter higher than normal tide could rise in the affected coastal areas. The agency has advised people in several provinces in the southern Philippines to immediately move to higher ground or reach safe places away from the sea.

Aftershock warning also issued

PHIVOLCS also said that this powerful earthquake could cause damage and strong aftershocks in the coming hours and days. At present, relief and disaster agencies are keeping an eye on the sea level and monitoring the situation. Officials have asked people to remain alert, ignore rumors and only follow government instructions.

Why do earthquakes occur in the Philippines?

Philippines is one of those countries in the world where natural disasters occur more often. This country is located in the Ring of Fire of the Pacific Ocean, where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur frequently. Apart from this, about 20 storms and cyclones also occur here every year, due to which people have to face difficulties again and again.
