Bangladesh pacer Nahid Rana produced a sensational display of fast bowling to lead his side to an emphatic 86-run victory over Australia in the opening ODI of the three-match series in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Clocking speeds consistently above 150 kmph, Rana dismantled Australia's batting lineup with figures of 4/41, helping Bangladesh secure only their second-ever ODI victory over Australia and their first in the format against the six-time world champions in more than two decades.

Chasing a target of 285, Australia’s innings got off to the worst possible start when Matt Short lost his wicket off the very first ball. Marnus Labuschagne’s struggles continued as he was trapped lbw by Mustafizur Rahman for just one, leaving the visitors under immediate pressure.

Stand-in captain Josh Inglis attempted to steady the innings but became Rana’s first victim after edging a fiery delivery through to wicketkeeper Litton Das. Alex Carey and Cooper Connolly briefly revived Australia’s hopes with a useful partnership, but Rana’s devastating second spell turned the contest firmly in Bangladesh’s favor.

Carey fell to the speedster shortly after the halfway stage, while debutant Liam Scott was undone by a sharp rising delivery that resulted in a brilliant catch by Tawhid Hridoy. Rana continued to strike at crucial intervals, leaving Australia’s chase in tatters.

Cameron Green fought a lone battle for the visitors, remaining unbeaten on 52. However, wickets kept tumbling around him as Mosaddek Hossain chipped in with two wickets after earlier starring with the bat.

With Australia struggling at 191/9, thunderstorms and lightning interrupted play with 7.4 overs remaining. The visitors still required 94 runs from 46 balls, and when conditions failed to improve, Bangladesh were declared winners by 86 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

Earlier, Bangladesh recovered strongly after losing an early wicket. Tanzid Hasan scored 54 while captain Najmul Hossain Shanto added 67 as the pair stitched together a crucial 96-run partnership.

The standout batting performance came from Mosaddek Hossain, who marked his return to international cricket after four years with a magnificent unbeaten 86. His late assault helped Bangladesh post a competitive 284/8 from their 50 overs.

Australia’s fielding woes also proved costly, with multiple dropped catches allowing both Shanto and Mosaddek to capitalize. Nathan Ellis was the pick of the Australian bowlers with 3/38, while Matt Renshaw and debutant Liam Scott claimed two wickets each.

But the night ultimately belonged to Rana, whose raw pace and relentless accuracy overwhelmed the Australian batters. Remarkably, he bowled only one delivery below 140 kmph throughout his spell, underlining the intensity of his performance.

Australia will now look to bounce back when the second ODI takes place in Dhaka on Thursday.
