A group of advocates and social activists presented a memorandum to the SDM of Kangra on Wednesday, expressing their deep concerns regarding the poor state of the road connecting the Old SDM office to the Daulatpur Tunnel. The delegation comprised advocates Saurabh Kaundal, Saurabh Chaudhary, Abhimanyu, Suraj, Manoj Mehta, Surinder Chaudhary, Archana Puri, and social worker Munish Bahdi.
The memorandum pointed out that the road has deteriorated into a series of potholes, resembling a drainage system rather than a national highway. Local residents, students, employees, traders, patients, and tourists are enduring daily challenges, with a persistent risk of accidents and potential loss of life.
The SDM assured the group that necessary measures would be taken, with repair work expected to commence within a week. However, advocate Saurabh Kaundal issued a 10-day ultimatum, stating that if no construction or repair efforts begin by then, a peaceful hunger strike will be organized on the 11th day at the SDM Court premises.
Kaundal criticized the administration for merely covering the road with loose soil instead of implementing proper repairs, warning that the upcoming monsoon rains would make the surface hazardous and increase the likelihood of accidents. He also questioned the government's assertion of making Kangra the 'tourism capital' when its main roads are in such disrepair. He emphasized that citizens who consistently pay taxes deserve safe and dependable road infrastructure.
The delegation urged that repair and reconstruction efforts be initiated urgently to provide immediate relief to the community.
