New Delhi: Love bites or hickeys are considered a common way of expressing love among couples these days. Due to prolonged pressure or sucking on the neck, shoulder or any part of the body during intimacy, a red or purple mark is formed on the skin, which is called hickey. But usually this mark heals on its own in a few days, but in many cases it can also become a serious threat to health.
According to experts, most love bites are not harmful and their marks disappear with time. However, if the color of the mark becomes dark purple, pain persists or swelling starts increasing, then it should not be ignored. Let us tell you, such symptoms can be a sign of some internal injury.
Doctors say that problems can arise due to excessive pressure on the blood vessels around the neck. Let us tell you, the carotid artery located in the neck works to supply oxygen and blood to the brain. However, if there is excessive pressure on it, blood flow can be affected, which increases the risk of serious conditions like stroke.
Not only this, in some cases the inner layer of the carotid artery can also get damaged. Due to this there is a possibility of blood clot formation. If this clot reaches the brain through the bloodstream, a brain stroke can occur. Its symptoms include sudden dizziness, numbness of any part of the body, difficulty in speaking or unconsciousness.
Blood vessels can burst
Along with this, experts also say that due to excessive pressure, small blood vessels can burst, causing internal bleeding and other complications. Although such cases are rarely seen, it is important to be careful.
If a hickey mark is formed, applying ice for the first two to three days can reduce swelling and pain. After this, a light warm compress improves blood circulation and helps in quick healing of the scars. However, if pain, swelling or marks persist for a long time, a doctor should be consulted immediately.
