Read, Digital Desk : Joe Root is no longer the No.1 batter in Test cricket after his failures during England’s first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s saw him fall two places from the top of the world rankings for one and eight with the bat in his two innings.
Harry Brook, England’s white-ball captain, has been crowned the new No.1 Test batter after Joe Root lost his grip on the top spot in the latest ICC rankings update released on Wednesday, June 10. Root dropped two places below Travis Head.
This is Brook’s return to the top spot of the Test rankings for the first time since 2024, the England Test vice-captain managed a half century in his side’s first innings, during which they endured a pitch rated “unsatisfactory” by ICC due to the amount of seam movement, while in the second essay the No.1 managed to duck out. Root however was only given 1 & 8 with the bat during the two knocks and fell out of the pinnacle spot.
Shubman Gill scales two places
India’s captain in Test matches Shubman Gill has also gained two places following his century in the one off Test against Afghanistan. With 126, Gill has ascended two places from 10th position to the eighth. With this, Gill is now India’s highest-ranked Test batsman with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has slipped to 9th, falling a place due to an insignificant outing in the lone inning India played.
Meanwhile, Washington Sundar gained places in all three formats following his all-around performance in the Afghanistan Test. With 5 spots in the batter’s list, the Southpaw jumped to 42nd position and secured two places in the all-rounder’s ranking reaching 9th while also rising 5 places in the bowler’s chart to 48th position.
Manav Suthar makes it to the top
In the meanwhile, Rajasthan’s all-rounder Manav Suthar has also reached the top 100 after his stupendous debut during the one-off Test in which he was adjudged Player of the Match owing to his six-wicket haul, and his rapid fire 28. Suthar made it to 82nd rank in the all-rounders list and secured a place in the bowlers list taking the 72nd spot.
Other players move up
Also, Gus Atkinson makes his way into the Top 10 thanks to his five-wicket haul in the first Test match against the Blackcaps, he rises seven places to be 10th in the list, sandwiched between Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon.
In ODI bowling ranks, Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed has reached the second position following his spectacular performance against the Aussies, which ended 2-1 in favour of Pakistan. Shaheen Shah Afridi, Pakistan’s lead pacer, made a 4-spot jump to 9th position thanks to the successful series against Australia.
