An important step has been taken towards further strengthening the maritime warfare capability of the Indian Navy. The official crest of Dunagiri, the fifth stealth frigate of Project 17A built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), has been launched. This new crest shows the attacking power, accuracy and advanced warfare capability of the warship.
The crest of Dunagiri depicts an osprey bird of prey flying over a high Himalayan mountain peak. This symbol reflects the spirit of a warrior who is capable of flying fast, pouncing on the enemy and attacking with surgical precision in every situation.
According to the Navy, this symbol represents combat capability and modern naval strength in all three dimensions: water, land and air.
The official motto of Dunagiri is Victory is my Profession. The Indian Navy believes that this state-of-the-art stealth frigate will prove to be an important force multiplier in future maritime operations.
This warship will play an important role in protecting India's strategic maritime interests including the Indian Ocean region and will give new strength to the Navy's operational capability.
Dunagiri is part of the Nilgiri class stealth frigates being built under Project 17A. This project is being considered very important towards the modernization of the Indian Navy and promoting indigenous defense production. Built with about 75 percent indigenous technology and equipment, this warship is also a strong example of the Self-reliant India campaign.
A number of state-of-the-art weapons and sensor systems have been installed at Dunagiri, including:
This modern frigate will carry forward the legacy of the Indian Navy's aging INS Dunagiri, which served the country for almost 33 years from 1977 to 2010. Now this new stealth frigate with the same name is going to become a part of the naval fleet with more modern and lethal capabilities.
For the Indian Navy, Dunagiri is not just a warship, but is considered a symbol of the country's growing maritime power, indigenous defense manufacturing capability and strategic self-reliance.
At present the official commissioning date of INS has not been announced. However, the warship has been delivered to the Indian Navy on 30 March 2026 and is currently undergoing final operational trials, weapon system testing and crew integration. According to defense sources, INS Dunagiri is likely to be formally commissioned into the Indian Navy soon
