Authorities in Ahmedabad have launched a large-scale anti-encroachment operation in the Isanpur area, targeting illegal constructions built on government-owned lake land. The drive aims to reclaim public land occupied over the years and restore control over water bodies owned by the state government and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).

The demolition campaign began near Amba Talav, close to the vegetable market and Moni Hotel Lane in the Lambha ward of the city's South Zone. Civic officials have initiated a major clearance operation to remove unauthorized settlements and structures that had encroached upon the lake's land.

26,000 Square Metres of Government Land to Be Reclaimed

The AMC's Estate Department deployed more than five JCBs and heavy-duty excavators early on June 12 to begin the demolition process. Officials estimate that nearly 26,000 square metres of valuable government land surrounding Amba Talav will be freed from illegal occupation once the operation is completed.

To ensure law and order during the drive, a substantial police force from the Isanpur and Narol police stations has been stationed at the site.

More Than 160 Illegal Homes and Commercial Structures Demolished

According to municipal authorities, the encroached area had witnessed extensive unauthorized construction over the years. More than 160 illegal structures had come up on the lake land, including 147 residential units and 14 commercial establishments.

Before carrying out the demolition, the civic body issued notices to residents and business owners, directing them to vacate the premises within the stipulated timeframe.

Rehabilitation Measures for Eligible Residents

AMC officials said efforts have been made to assist affected residents through rehabilitation measures. Individuals who can provide valid documents proving eligibility will be considered for government housing under the municipal rehabilitation scheme.

For families requiring immediate shelter, temporary accommodation has also been arranged at nearby night shelters operated by the civic administration.

Lake Restoration and Water Conservation at the Core of the Project

The administration stated that reclaiming encroached lake land is part of a broader initiative to restore and deepen water bodies across the city. Officials believe that rejuvenating these lakes will improve rainwater storage capacity during the monsoon season and contribute to better water management.

As a precautionary measure, medical teams and fire brigade personnel have been deployed at the demolition site to handle any emergencies during the operation.

Senior officials from the state government, including representatives from the Narmada Corporation and water resources departments, are closely monitoring the implementation of water conservation and land restoration projects to ensure smooth coordination between agencies.
