Fulham appear on the verge of appointing former Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa as their new head coach, with the club moving into advanced discussions to secure his services. The Spanish tactician has emerged as the prime candidate to succeed Marco Silva, as the West London side aim to sustain their Premier League progress through a marquee appointment.

Arbeloa has reportedly taken pole position in the race to fill the vacancy at Craven Cottage. As per talkSPORT, the 43-year-old is now the clear favourite to assume charge, following Fulham’s renewed focus on him after a period of managerial uncertainty. Arbeloa, who briefly served as Real Madrid’s interim boss earlier this year, recently became available after departing the Bernabeu earlier this week.

The former Real Madrid and Liverpool defender stepped in as caretaker manager following Xabi Alonso’s exit in January. However, his short tenure was challenging, as the Spanish giants were eliminated from the Copa del Rey, the Champions League, and fell out of the La Liga title race. With Jose Mourinho confirmed as Madrid’s next permanent head coach, Arbeloa officially left the club on Tuesday, clearing the way for a possible move to England. Fulham have acted swiftly, initiating talks with the Spaniard to bring in a coach with top-tier European experience and a decorated playing background.

The club’s pursuit of Arbeloa follows a setback in their earlier approach for Kieran McKenna. The Northern Irishman, who guided Ipswich Town to Premier League promotion, was initially the leading candidate for the Fulham role. However, after announcing his resignation from Ipswich, McKenna surprised many by revealing he intended to take a break from football management. This development prompted Fulham’s hierarchy to quickly turn their attention to Arbeloa, refusing to compromise on their ambitions.

Despite Arbeloa being the frontrunner, Fulham have been thorough in their search. Chelsea legend and current Coventry manager Frank Lampard remains on the shortlist, along with Abel Ferreira, who has earned plaudits for his successful tenure at Brazilian side Palmeiras. The club’s leadership is intent on finding a manager capable of continuing the tactical progress and stability achieved under Silva.

Another name that has surfaced in discussions is Ruben Amorim. The highly regarded Portuguese coach, previously linked with Manchester United, is admired across Europe. However, his current situation remains uncertain, as reports suggest he is in advanced talks with AC Milan, making a move to Craven Cottage less likely at this stage.

Hugo Oliveira, currently managing Portuguese outfit Famalicao, has also been considered. Oliveira holds familiarity with the Fulham setup, having previously served on Silva’s backroom staff. His understanding of the club’s infrastructure and existing squad could make him a viable alternative should negotiations with Arbeloa not reach completion.

The managerial opening arose following Marco Silva’s departure to Portuguese giants Benfica. Silva leaves Fulham after guiding them to a respectable 11th-place finish in the Premier League, opting to return to his homeland to take on a new challenge in Lisbon. His exit has prompted Fulham to act decisively in finding a successor who can build upon the foundation he established at Craven Cottage.
