Amad Diallo’s Last-Minute Strike Seals Ivory Coast’s First World Cup Win in 12 Years Against Ecuador

Amad Diallo emerged as the match-winner for Ivory Coast with a stunning 90th-minute goal that delivered a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their 2026 World Cup opener. The Manchester United winger came off the bench to end the Elephants’ 12-year wait for a World Cup win while simultaneously ending Ecuador’s impressive 19-match unbeaten run.

Amad makes his mark for Fae

Although left out of Emerse Fae’s starting line-up in Philadelphia, Amad maintained his composure and focus. The United star was full of energy during the half-time warm-up, and his determination paid off when he replaced Bazoumana Toure just 10 minutes into the second half.

The decisive moment came at the very end of normal time. Wilfried Singo, who had just been shifted to right-back, sprinted down the flank and sent a precise low cross into the box. Amad demonstrated remarkable calmness, side-footing the ball past Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez, triggering jubilant celebrations among the Ivory Coast players and staff.

Ecuador’s frustration as Ivory Coast find their rhythm

The result was a bitter pill for Ecuador, who had controlled the opening half-hour and looked every bit the unbeaten side they were. John Yeboah was instrumental in their early dominance, cutting inside to unleash a curling shot that hit the crossbar after Emmanuel Agbadou slipped at a crucial moment.

The woodwork came to Ecuador’s rescue again shortly after. Pedro Vite’s excellent through-ball found Alan Minda, but the forward’s close-range strike smashed against the frame of the goal. Despite their early pressure, Ecuador failed to keep troubling Yahia Fofana in the second half, a lapse they would come to regret.

Ivory Coast, the reigning 2023 AFCON champions, took time to settle into their rhythm. Yan Diomande looked lively but lacked the finishing touch. The introductions of Amad and Ange-Yoan Bonny changed the dynamic completely, adding a clinical edge to the African champions' attack that had been missing earlier.

Before Amad’s winner, Elye Wahi had come close to breaking the deadlock, hitting the crossbar after connecting with a fine delivery from Nicolas Pepe. However, the Elephants refused to settle for a draw, pushing relentlessly until the end to secure their first World Cup victory since 2014 in Brazil.

Germany challenge next for the Elephants

The win gives Ivory Coast a solid start in Group E, but coach Fae’s tactical calls will be under scrutiny before their next match against Germany. Many questioned his decision to start Toure instead of Amad, particularly as the Manchester United player had scored the decisive goal in a pre-tournament friendly against France.

Germany, who thrashed Curacao 7-1 in their first match, will provide a far sterner test. Ivory Coast showed defensive frailties early in the Ecuador game, and they will need to tighten up considerably to contain the attacking strength of the four-time world champions when they meet on Saturday evening.
