The Mayor of Palangka Raya, Fairid Naparin, who is an avid football fan and a supporter of Manchester United, revealed that he will be backing England throughout the tournament.
Fairid said he has already made preparations to follow the World Cup 2026 matches closely. He has even set up a Set Top Box (STB) at home to ensure he doesn’t miss any live broadcasts of the games.
Among all the participating teams, his support lies with England, a choice influenced by his long-time enthusiasm for the English Premier League.
Many players he has admired over the years currently play in that league.
“I’ve always been a fan of the Premier League. Naturally, many of the players I follow play there, so personally, I’m rooting for England,” he said during a media gathering at Sejiwa Coffee on Saturday (13 June 2026).
Despite his support for England, Fairid stated that he prefers not to set his expectations too high regarding the team’s chances of winning the World Cup.
“We just have to be realistic,” he said with a laugh.
As a Manchester United supporter, Fairid acknowledged that both victory and defeat are integral parts of football.
“I’m a Manchester United fan. I understand that recently, the team’s performance hasn’t been great. But as supporters, whether they win or lose, we always stand by them,” he added.
In addition to watching matches from home, Fairid hopes that the excitement of the 2026 World Cup can also be enjoyed by the people of Palangka Raya through public viewing events.
He welcomed TVRI’s role as the official broadcaster of the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Indonesia, noting that it provides broader access for the public to watch the games and opens up opportunities for collaboration in hosting communal viewing events.
Fairid mentioned that discussions about such events have already been held with TVRI. Major matches, or “big matches,” will be prioritized for public screenings.
“Yes, we’ve already discussed it with TVRI. The events will be organized at TVRI, and we’ll select matches that are truly big fixtures,” he stated.
Fairid also expressed his intention to join the public in watching some of these matches if the events take place.
“God willing, I’ll be there to watch,” he said.
