Ruben Amorim is all set to make his comeback to the dugout after reaching an agreement to become the new head coach of AC Milan, reports suggest. The Portuguese manager, who has been without a club since being dismissed by Manchester United in January, is expected to sign an initial two-year contract to succeed Massimiliano Allegri at San Siro.
Contract details and salary at San Siro
The 41-year-old has reportedly accepted a two-year deal that will keep him at AC Milan until 2028, with an option to extend for an additional season, according to A Bola. Although Amorim initially intended to take a break after leaving Old Trafford, the opportunity to manage the seven-time European champions proved too tempting to resist.
Financial details have also been finalised. The former Sporting CP boss will earn a base salary of €3.5 million per year, supplemented by performance-related bonuses linked to winning trophies and securing qualification for the Champions League — a tournament Milan have missed out on in each of the last two seasons.
Final approval awaited from Gerry Cardinale
While the core terms of the deal have been settled, Amorim is now awaiting final approval from Gerry Cardinale, the head of RedBird Capital and owner of AC Milan. Once the go-ahead is given, Amorim is expected to travel to Milan immediately to sign the contract and begin preparations for the new campaign.
AC Milan had explored several other options, including 38-year-old Matthias Jaissle, but Amorim’s availability as a free agent gave him a clear advantage. His appointment also allowed the club to avoid paying a heavy release clause, which would have been necessary if they had chosen to pursue the Al-Ahli manager instead.
Manchester United gain financial relief
Amorim’s quick return to management will also provide considerable financial relief to Manchester United. The Premier League club had been facing a significant payout of £16.7 million following his dismissal and that of his coaching team earlier this year.
By accepting a new role so swiftly, Amorim effectively forfeits a large part of the compensation package still owed to him by the Red Devils. This financial reprieve comes at an ideal time for United, who have already seen an upturn in performances on the field under their current manager, Michael Carrick.
Ongoing restructuring at AC Milan
The report further highlights that appointing a new coach marks just one step in AC Milan’s broader restructuring efforts. The club is also in the midst of naming a new sporting director to lead a comprehensive rebuild of the first-team squad. Markus Krosche of Eintracht Frankfurt and Devin Ozek of Fenerbahce are said to be the leading candidates for the position.
Ozek, in particular, has earned high praise for assembling the Bayer Leverkusen team that famously ended Bayern Munich’s long-standing rule over the Bundesliga. With Amorim taking charge and a new recruitment chief expected to join soon, Milan supporters will be optimistic about a strong resurgence in Serie A.
