Lamine Yamal has urged Spanish supporters to remain calm after Spain were held to a draw by debutants Cape Verde.
BOLASPORT.COM – Spain’s young star, Lamine Yamal, shared his thoughts following his team’s failure to secure victory against Cape Verde in the 2026 World Cup.
A major upset unfolded in the opening match of Group H at the 2026 World Cup, where Spain were unable to claim three points against Cape Verde.
The clash took place at Atlanta Stadium on Monday (15 June 2026) local time, ending in a 0-0 stalemate, forcing both sides to settle for a single point.
Throughout the match, Spain dominated possession and dictated play.
However, La Roja struggled to break through Cape Verde’s compact defensive line, which remained tightly organised at the back.
Spain managed to fire eight shots on target, but all were brilliantly saved by Cape Verde’s goalkeeper Vozinha, who delivered an outstanding performance between the posts.
The result came as a shock, considering Spain entered the tournament as one of the favourites, while Cape Verde were making their World Cup debut.
Moreover, Spain’s squad boasts far greater depth and quality compared to their opponents.
Unsurprisingly, this disappointing outcome triggered a wave of criticism from fans who questioned the capabilities of Luis de la Fuente’s side.
Amid the growing criticism, Lamine Yamal stepped forward to calm the situation.
The young Barcelona winger shared a message on his personal Instagram account, urging fans not to panic and to continue believing in the team.
He emphasised that the draw in their opening match was not the end of their journey, as the tournament is still long and full of opportunities.
Yamal also vowed that the entire squad would immediately evaluate their performance and come back stronger in the next fixture.
“The first World Cup match and we earned one point,” Yamal wrote.
“We know this competition is long and the goal is still far away, but we will keep working hard, and everything will go as we expect.”
“So, don’t doubt us.”
On a personal note, Yamal expressed his gratitude for being able to play in the match, even though he only came on midway through the second half.
As is widely known, he had previously been sidelined by an injury that threatened his participation in this prestigious four-year tournament.
“I thank God for allowing me to play again after my injury,” he wrote.
“I also want to thank my family, who have always been by my side, supporting and accompanying me every step of the way,” added the 18-year-old player.
Just hours after Spain’s match, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay also played out a draw, leaving the competition in Group H wide open.
