Diabetes is often considered to be only a problem of increased blood sugar, but experts say that it can affect many important organs of the body as well as bones. Long-term uncontrolled sugar levels can damage the strength of bones and their internal structure, increasing the risk of fractures and joint problems.

According to health experts, high blood sugar affects the health of blood vessels, nerves, kidneys, eyes and heart as well as bones. Nowadays, cases of diabetes are increasing even among young people, due to which the risk of bone problems is also increasing.

How are bones affected?

According to medical studies, prolonged exposure to high glucose levels can affect the microstructure of collagen and bones in the body. Due to this, the bones become weak and fragile from inside despite appearing normal from outside. In such patients, there is a higher possibility of fracture due to minor injury or fall.

Increasing risk of ‘diabetic bone disease’

Experts say that diabetes can promote problems to bones and joints. This condition is called ‘diabetic bone disease’. Due to this, the quality of bones is affected and the risk of problems like osteoporosis may increase.

Additionally, high blood sugar can cause tissues to harden, leading to stiffness in the shoulders and other joints. Cases of frozen shoulder are also seen relatively more in diabetic patients.

What do doctors say?

According to doctors, bones continuously remove old cells and form new cells. But chronically high blood sugar can hinder this natural process. This affects the ability to form new bones and their quality may decrease.

Researchers believe that inflammation, oxidative stress and hormonal changes associated with diabetes also contribute to bone loss.

What to do to keep bones healthy?

  • Try to control blood sugar.
  • Eat a balanced and nutritious diet.
  • Consume adequate amount of protein, calcium and vitamin D.
  • Adopt regular exercise and physical activities.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption.
  • Get your health checked from time to time as per doctor’s advice.

Experts say that proper management of diabetes not only helps in controlling sugar but also plays an important role in keeping bones and joints healthy in the long run.
