Manchester United’s long-running quest to find a head coach capable of reviving the club’s golden era at Old Trafford has proven an uphill task over the past decade. Numerous renowned managers have taken charge at the Theatre of Dreams, only to fall short of expectations.
Erik ten Hag is among those names. Despite failing to deliver consistent success in the Premier League, the Dutchman did record notable achievements, including victories in both domestic cup competitions and a series of memorable European performances during his tenure in Manchester.
However, following a disappointing start to the 2024/25 season, Ten Hag was dismissed from his role. His departure also left behind part of his backroom team, including assistant coach René Hake, who had worked alongside him.
Hake soon exited the club as well, as part of the sweeping changes that accompanied the appointment of Ruben Amorim, who brought in his own trusted coaching staff to reshape the team’s technical setup.
In 2025, Hake reunited with former Manchester United forward Robin van Persie at Feyenoord, with the pair aiming to guide the Dutch giants back to the summit of the Eredivisie.
Unfortunately, those ambitions did not materialise. Van Persie recently lost his managerial position, and Hake was dismissed shortly thereafter.
Feyenoord issued an official statement confirming the exits of both Hake and Van Persie’s assistant Brian Pinas, following a season in which the team finished 19 points behind runaway champions PSV Eindhoven.
The club’s announcement was concise, confirming that Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been entrusted with leading Feyenoord into the new campaign.
“Feyenoord has parted ways with René Hake and Brian Pinas. The duo were part of the coaching staff of Feyenoord’s first team last season, but will leave the club as well, following the departure of head coach Robin van Persie,” read the statement.
Since Hake’s departure from Manchester United, Ruben Amorim’s tenure at the club also came to an early end after just 14 months in charge, with the Red Devils still searching for a manager capable of restoring the glory days once enjoyed under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Michael Carrick has now been handed that responsibility after an impressive stint as interim boss earned him the position of head coach on a permanent basis.
Fans at Old Trafford will be eager for Carrick to replicate the strong performances seen in the latter half of last season, when United matched the best-performing sides in terms of points collected after he assumed control.
A busy transfer window lies ahead for INEOS, who are expected to strengthen Carrick’s squad in preparation for competing across multiple fronts next season. With Champions League football returning to Old Trafford, expectations are high for significant improvement in domestic cup competitions and a continuation of the team’s solid league form.
