Mason Greenwood’s future at Marseille appears to be hanging in the balance as Serie A giants Roma intensify their pursuit of the English forward. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini has reportedly made direct contact with the former Manchester United player, asking him to hold off on other transfer options while the Giallorossi finalise their opening proposal.
Gasperini steps up pursuit
Roma head coach Gasperini is taking a proactive approach in his efforts to bring Greenwood back to Italy, allegedly calling the player personally. As reported by Corriere dello Sport, the Italian manager has requested the 24-year-old to “wait” while Roma formalise their official bid to Marseille.
Gasperini has previously voiced his dissatisfaction with Roma’s attacking depth during the 2025-26 campaign and views Greenwood as the perfect addition to strengthen his forward line. His direct involvement underlines Greenwood’s importance to Roma’s ambitions as they aim to mount a serious challenge in Serie A next season.
Roma reportedly agree personal terms
The Giallorossi have seemingly overcome a major obstacle by agreeing personal terms with Greenwood, who is said to favour a move to the Stadio Olimpico. Reports indicate that the contract on offer features a progressive salary package starting at €4 million net per year.
Although Fenerbahce were once linked with the Englishman, their interest has faded considerably following recent elections within the club. This development has allowed Roma to move to the front of the queue, with club owner Ryan Friedkin reportedly in communication with Greenwood’s camp to outline the role he would play in the Italian capital.
Roma’s initial offer details emerge
Despite Greenwood’s willingness to join, negotiations between Roma and Marseille have hit a snag over the fee. Marseille, under pressure to raise funds to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, are believed to be holding out for around €55 million following Greenwood’s impressive spell in Ligue 1.
According to the report, Roma are preparing to test that stance with an opening bid worth approximately €40 million including performance-related bonuses. The Italian club are also open to structuring the deal as an initial loan with an obligation to buy, although it remains uncertain whether Marseille would accept such terms given their urgent need for cash to meet financial requirements.
Manchester United to benefit from sell-on clause
Old Trafford officials are monitoring the situation closely, as Manchester United included a substantial sell-on clause when they transferred Greenwood to Marseille. Any permanent move this summer would entitle the Premier League side to a share of the transfer fee, providing a welcome boost to their own summer spending plans.
Furthermore, Roma are said to be considering adding a sell-on clause of their own—reportedly exceeding 10 per cent—to help bridge the valuation gap between both clubs. As discussions continue, reports suggest that Greenwood has already begun preparations to leave his residence in France in anticipation of a move across the Alps to join Roma.
