England vs Croatia preview: Thomas Tuchel begins World Cup 2026 campaign against familiar foes

England’s modest ‘It’s Coming Home’ slogan, borrowed from the classic football anthem ‘Three Lions’, remains just as unpopular among Croatian players as it is anywhere else.

The World Cup 2026 draw has once again paired England with Croatia and Panama — two sides they faced in Russia eight years ago. Croatia, in particular, have been familiar rivals during the Gareth Southgate era.

Croatia’s 2-1 victory after extra time in the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup brought an end to Southgate’s most successful World Cup run, yet since then, they have failed to beat England in three subsequent competitive encounters.

England WIN - 4/6

Draw - 13/5

Croatia WIN - 15/4

As both England and Croatia kick off their World Cup campaigns in Texas, perhaps their biggest challenge could be avoiding complacency. On paper, both teams are expected to advance to the round of 32 regardless of today’s result. However, a defeat at AT&T Stadium could leave the loser vulnerable to a potential upset by Ghana.

So far in this World Cup, overconfidence has rarely been an issue, and there’s no reason to believe England or Croatia will be any exception — particularly given how much both sides relish the chance to outdo each other.

If England and Croatia have quietly developed one of international football’s most entertaining rivalries, Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric has been at the centre of it from the beginning.

Now 40 years old, Modric continues to exert his influence, representing AC Milan after a brilliant career with Dinamo Zagreb, Tottenham Hotspur, and Real Madrid. He is set to make his 200th senior international appearance against Panama in Croatia’s second group match.

Although Modric remains a key figure, England’s prospects against Croatia will largely depend on how effectively their midfield can disrupt and replicate his intelligent control of the game.

England’s progressive possession style was the standout feature in their friendly win over Costa Rica, and perhaps this is exactly what the Three Lions have lacked in major clashes with top international opponents over the past decade.

For Thomas Tuchel, this Group L opener represents a crucial test. While Croatia may no longer carry the aura of recent World Cup finalists, they remain the toughest opponent in the group on paper — and England will need to demonstrate their true potential.
