DON'T MISS A MOMENT OF THE WORLD CUP

'As Always' – Tomas Brolin declares England have zero chance at World Cup and predicts how far the Three Lions will progress

Former Sweden international Tomas Brolin has bluntly dismissed England’s prospects of winning the World Cup this summer. The veteran footballer believes Thomas Tuchel’s squad, still seeking their first title since 1966, are significantly overrated. In addition to his view on England’s chances, Brolin also discussed Cristiano Ronaldo’s career longevity and tipped Michael Olise to make a major impact on the global stage.

Tomas Brolin rules out England’s World Cup hopes

On the eve of the tournament’s opening match, Brolin categorically wrote off Tuchel’s team, asserting that the hype surrounding them is far greater than their actual potential. England have only one major international trophy to their name, having last lifted the World Cup in 1966.

Speaking to Hajper, the former Swedish star delivered a cutting evaluation of the Three Lions’ ambitions. The ex-forward was forthright in his belief that England’s campaign will be short-lived. “As usual, I don’t think they have any major chance. It’s probably just the people on that island who believe they are going to win. They have done so for many years and continue to think that way. But I wasn’t born there, so no. Quarterfinals possibly. That’s probably the furthest I think England will go,” he stated.

Cristiano Ronaldo still has years left to play

Moving beyond his criticism of England, Brolin strongly rejected suggestions that Cristiano Ronaldo is nearing retirement. Despite hanging up his own boots at the age of 28, the Swedish legend is convinced that the 41-year-old forward will continue playing beyond this tournament. He emphasised that Ronaldo’s motivation remains as strong as ever.

“As long as you think football is fun, whether you’re 28, 30, or 40, it doesn’t matter. You just keep going. Once you stop, it’s over for good. So you must carry on as long as you enjoy it. No one else can make that decision for you. As long as you find joy in it, keep playing,” Brolin explained.

Michael Olise backed for Ballon d’Or success

The discussion then shifted to the prestigious Ballon d’Or and the young talents who could claim the award. Brolin believes France’s Michael Olise has a genuine chance to surpass global stars such as Kylian Mbappe and Spain’s Lamine Yamal if he delivers a standout performance this summer.

“If anyone can win the Ballon d’Or this year, it’s between those two who are closest at hand. But others could emerge from teams that perform exceptionally well,” he said.

“We saw Michael Olise score three goals in the last match before the World Cup. There are also many players from Spain—if Yamal doesn’t step up and score his goals, especially since he’s had some injury issues, others could shine. So many can rise to the occasion if they’re not the leading scorers or standout performers. But if one of them wins, it will likely be Yamal or Mbappe,” Brolin added.

What lies ahead for Tuchel’s side?

England enter the World Cup with plenty to prove as they begin their Group L campaign today. Tuchel’s men open their tournament against Croatia on June 17, followed by a clash with Ghana on June 23, before finishing their group stage against Panama on June 27. A strong showing in their opening game will be vital if the Three Lions are to mount a genuine challenge for global glory.
