Gardeners are being urged to make the most of June’s warmer temperatures by planting five popular flowers and vegetables that thrive at this time of year.
Experts say the combination of warmer soil and longer daylight hours makes June one of the best months for establishing plants, with crops and flowers often growing much faster than they would earlier in the season. Despite recent spells of wet weather across parts of the UK, gardening specialists say conditions remain ideal for planting thanks to consistently mild temperatures.

Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress.co.uk, said June offers a valuable opportunity for gardeners to boost their plots ahead of summer. “June is typically a time of year when the ground begins to warm up, and we see our plants grow much faster,” he said.
“Although we have had some rainfall lately, the temperatures are still pretty consistent, which means gardeners will find they are able to plant most things.
“We’ve pulled together a list of our top picks to plant this month for those feeling unsure on what to do.
“Gardeners looking to grow some veg should consider carrots or cucumbers. These are both pretty beginner-friendly; they just need the right growing conditions and care. Other plants to grow include hebe, cosmos and marigolds.”
Carrots are among the easiest vegetables to sow in June and can be planted directly into well-drained, moisture-retentive soil.
Experts recommend spacing seedlings around 5cm apart to allow enough room for roots to develop properly. Those growing carrots in containers should choose pots at least 30cm deep to accommodate the crop.
With warmer weather arriving, June is an ideal time to plant cucumbers, provided temperatures remain consistently above 12C.
The vegetable requires generous watering after planting and climbing varieties should be supported with canes or trellises. This makes cucumbers particularly suitable for smaller gardens where space is limited.
Gardeners looking to add structure and year-round interest to their outdoor spaces may want to consider planting hebe shrubs.
The popular evergreen performs best in sunny or partially shaded positions and prefers free-draining soil. Regular watering is important during hot weather until plants become fully established.
Known for their vibrant colours and long flowering season, cosmos are a favourite among gardeners seeking a splash of summer colour.
They thrive in warm, sunny spots and require well-drained soil. Experts advise watering deeply during dry spells while plants are establishing before allowing the soil to dry between waterings.
Marigolds are another summer favourite and can continue blooming well into August.
The cheerful flowers prefer full sun and sheltered locations, as strong winds can damage their delicate blooms. Once established, they require little maintenance beyond occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.
Experts say planting now will give gardeners the best chance of enjoying colourful displays and homegrown produce throughout the summer months.
With longer days and warmer conditions encouraging rapid growth, June could be one of the most rewarding times of the year to get planting.
